Opening a catalog from network storage

I would like to be able to open a catalog from two different computers on my home network so that I can manage and edit the images in the folder from any one of my computers. I have a NAS box. however, when the catalog is on an internal drive, I cannot read it from any other computer.

how do I set this up to be able to launch and utilize a given catalog from more than one computer and keep all the changes/edits up to date when a catalog is modified?

Ah Steve, you've run into one of the limitations of the database. You can have the images on a network drive, but not a catalog. The reasoning behind this is that it would be too easily corrupted, even by the network connection dropping at the wrong time. By all means add your voice to the requests here: Official Feature Request/Bug Report Form

In the meantime, workarounds...

1. Put the catalog on an external drive and plug that drive into whichever machine you wish to use. The images themselves can be on the NAS.

2. Store the catalog on the NAS, but copy it to the local drive of whichever computer you're using, work on it, and then copy it back. Obviously you'd have to be careful that both computers weren't working on it at the same time, and make regular backups.

3. Keep the catalog on both computer's local drives, and use file sync software to make sure they both have the latest version at all time, again being careful that both computers don't work on it at the same time.

OK - I think I understand at this point.

However - I took a folder that contained images and the catalog and copied it from an internal drive to a NAS drive. When I attempted to open the catalog that was copied to the NAS drive - a message came up that said a catalog on a network drive could not be opened.

Was this expected?

Solution? Do I need to copy the catalog from the NAS drive to my second machine and be on my merry way? If so, does the file structure stay in place, provided I moved all the images in the catalog to the same spot/folder? Will this avoid all the ?? on the images in the catalog when I open a copied version from my second or third machine?

I clearly understand that I cannot use the same catalog on two machines at the same time.

Yes, that's expected. The catalog can't be on network storage. The images can be. So you'd pick up just the catalog and copy that to the local drive. The images will still be in the same place, so there shouldn't be question marks.

So, my next question: Can I move images from a folder on my internal HDD on my primary machine to the NAS, then, copy the catalog to a second machine and still not get the ??'s

You'll get the question marks the first time you move from the internal to NAS, but after that, as long as the images stay in the same place on the NAS, you shouldn't see further question marks regardless of which computer the catalog is open on. I don't know how your NAS mounts - as another drive letter? If so, just make sure you set the drive letter the same each time.
