open as layers in photoshop without image stacking?

Hi everyone.
I often need to make one large image composite of multiple frames. So basically i just need a big canvas with 1' or so pictures in there. When I select multiple images in lightroom and open them all as layers, they are just stacked on top of each other, and i have manually expand my canvas and move the layers around so they are in rows/columns like i need.

i wonder if there is a way to open multiple images in one file in photoshop and have them auto arranged in a row/column order of my choosing?

I guess you are going to have to get into scripting Photoshop, though one problem might be deciding which frame goes where. A script can detect the image size and width, and then feed those values into the offset filter, and set the canvas size. You can achieve something similar with an action, but it wouldn't handle different image sizes very well. In each case, you can roll it up into a droplet which you could launch from LR's Export dialog.

Scripting is probably your only route if you need them on separate layers but not overlapping.

If you just need to get all of them in one file and not overlapping (and you don't care if they are on separate layers) then go to the Print module. Layout your images on a contact sheet. Print to JPEG. Then open the JPEG in Photoshop. Now you have all the images in a grid and not overlapping.
