One Last Question

I'm going to start watching a series of on-line tutorials but I have one last question here.

When I move a picture or catalog into Photoshop. Am I correct in thinking that the actual IMAGE does not move and is not duplicated? That photoshop keeps all changes in a data base but unless I actually save (export) a copy of the original with changes applied that there is only one image, and that's the original image in it's original file location?

I've got thousands of images, most of which I have no desire to have duplicates. I'm thinking Photoshop may set the image up in it's data base but it does not actually make a copy of the image when it "imports".

If you are referring to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, then you are correct. If you are referring to Photoshop CS3/CS4 itself, then no, you are not correct.

So if we're talking about Lightroom, you want the 'Add to Catalog at the Existing Location' option in the import dialog.

I'm using Lightroom 2.5. I added by simply going to the "Folders" options on the side of the screen and selected "Add Folder" which gave me a pop up window of my hard drive and I added my image folders.

I'm not seeing this "Add to Catalog at the Existing Location" option you mention. Under file I see Import from Disk, Import from Device, and Import from Catalog. Wait, ok, If I try to add one from the disk a number of options come up including one that says Add Photos to Catalog without moving.

Hmm, I wonder if adding the folder moved it as opposed to doing this import? If it did, I'll delete them and start over.

You can find out by right clicking on an image and choosing Show in Explorer and it'll show you where it is on disk.

Thanks. I did just that and explorer took me back to the original location. So adding the existing folders apparently does not cause 2.5 version to create a new folder somewhere with the same name.

I'm starting to play with some of the editing options and getting a grasp of it. Looking forward to watching the how-to videos.
