offline or missing

New to LR and just trying to load in my archived (to CD & DVD) photos. I love the idea that although the photos are offline, via the cached previews I can still view them BUT...........
Some photos I can view OK and other photos it states that they are 'offline or missing' and only gives me a very poor quality view. I don't understand why photos that reside in the same location (all offline in a specific folders) and are imported at the same time are treated differently. LR also sometimes has two version of the same photo. One with the correct name (e.g DSCF''33.jpg) which can be view OK and another (with a name like 2'''_'329_'13239AA.JPG) which is offline or missing.
I am still experimenting with LR and I want to ensure that I know what I am doing before I load in all of my archived photos (several thousand).
HELP AND ADVICE, WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED !

Hi henesys, welcome to the forum!

The poor quality previews are usually because LR hasn't rendered its own standard size previews before you took the CD out. Best options on that - either in the import dialog, select 'standard' as the preview size, and for any that already exist in LR, put the original CD back in so that it finds them again, select them all in Grid view and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews.

The ones that are still online are probably on your hard drive. You may have had the import dialog set to copy to a new location, and in that case, that could explain the different naming system too.

Would that make sense to you?

I am with Victoria on this one. When and after you import, you will see a progress bar top left of the interface. Do not remove CDs/DVDs until the rendering job is complete...

Excellent, yes that has done it. I was a bit too quick on pulling out the CD/DVD before. I know I am going to have loads of more question about LR, so was looking at your eBook Victoria. Does it cover LR 2.1 ? Also do you know if anywhere is stated a best practice / methodology for working with LR (archiving DAM etc...)

Hi henesys, yes, it's up to date for 2.1 - there were no new features in the 2.1 release.

What sort of thing do you have in mind for your DAM setup. I used to keep archived files on CD/DVD, but external hard drives are far more convenient - might be worth considering. We'll be pleased to talk you through any questions you might have.

OK - I have a history of about 25 CD/DVD's with my personal (family) images going back to 2''1. I have just completed puttng them all into a 'Home' catalogue in LR, which is fantastic as they can now all be viewed online and keyed. I always produce 2 copies of each CD/DVD (master & copy) for additional security. I am thinking about keeping the same setup for the family photos (sound OK to you ?).
As of this year I have started out as a freelance photographer. One avenue I am going to try and progress is stock photography (Photographers Direct initially). So I have created a 'Work' catalogue (seemed like the way to go) and I am just thinking how best to organise this area. Not sure the model I have used for my personal stuff is appropriate. Also trying to get my head around keywords, IPTC meta data etc etc. I am wary of starting out with a strategy that turns round and bites me in the bum in the future (worked in IT for 2' years so know this happens). So any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Steve

Your current strategy sounds sensible - only thing I'd do personally is to keep one set on hard drive and the other on CD/DVD offsite. Or if nothing else, use 2 different brands of CD/DVD - as you might guess, I've had some experience of CD/DVD's dying after a certain length of time!

With your work catalog, I'd tend to store them in folders by date personally, either YYMMDD or just YYMM, depending on how many you shoot in a month. That makes it really easy to find and backup files, and then I'd suggest keywords for organising them.
