Hi there,

Sorry if this is really obvious but a weird issue hoping someone can help with. using LR2 beta and on two macs we edit thousands of images and never had an issue.

Until now.....

Trying to export around 5'' images and LR keeps saying it cannot find the files or they are missing, they are not missing and are all in the original folder without the corrections, whenever I try and re link it says the file is already in LR which it is.

We religiously back up the Ircat files twice daily and not sure exactly how to go back and import the Ircat file from say yesterday which I am hoping will do the trick, really not relishing the thought of 4/5 hours on these images again or shooting my assistant, any words of wisdom would be great.

Many thanks

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy - as I'm the first to respond - welcome along! ;)

Is there a chance that any files were renamed at some point?

I had a similar issue (which did my head in at the time!) - my usual import is to convert to 'dng' and I switched to using 'DNG' for a bit but also renamed a bunch of other files in Finder (from .dng to .DNG) and everything ticked along until I tried to export or move files in LR, when I ran into the same issue as you. Note, I'm using 1.4.1, not the Beta.

How are you trying to relink the files? Are you right-clicking on red folders, or on the question mark on the missing files, or something else?

An lrcat file is an lrcat file, regardless of where it's located. You can just double-click one of the recent backups to open it. (or choose it from the open menu)

Hi Guys.

Thanks for your input, still struggling with this and it seems like it will have to be edited again from scratch.

Brad, I am trying to relink by rightclicking and also the question mark, any other suggestions?

Stas, The files are all RAW and the issue came about after renaming them and tryint to export as high res JPEG, as they wont't link I cannot rename then back, I have now been back and opened LR via backup and LR now shows no preview of the images either? any magic cure other than 4 more hours of editing???

Help.......

Thanks.

Jeremy, as you say you renamed your files, have a read of this thread in case it gives you some ideas to try, and the highlighted post is what I did to resolve the problem.

Edit: the bottom line here being reconciling the physical images on the HD with what LR thinks is going on.

Good luck!

Hi Stas appreciate your help, I have checked the naming of the files etc and they seem to match exactly, so frustrating as I know everything is there so to speak I just can't see it I could rename the RAWs outside of LR but they match the filenames in LR which is the weird thing....

Agggghhhhhhhh

Can you try importing one of those images back into LR without applying any presets, etc,? To see what that does..

If there was some difference in the filenames then I'd be suggesting something like what I did, i.e. moving files/folders, then isolating the 'correct' images, putting them somewhere temporary, trash the rest, then put them back where they are supposed to be.

I imported again and it was fine of course minus all the hours of wonderful post production,

I went to export one of the NEFs even though I cannot see the preview, it tells me it cant find it would I like to locate it?

Once I go to the file it tells me the image is associated with another file in the catalogue, so frustrating .....

That's exactly the same issue I had (with frustrations into the bundle) - can't remember now if it told me the filename of the file it was actually associated with in that message. At this point I still think it's got something to do with the renaming you mentioned (that's my hunch anyway), just can't fathom out where to take it from here if filenames are identical in every way. You could try changing one of the affected filenames back to a previous filename, or the original filename at time of import, see if that changes anything.

The import you did at least confirms that image you're thinking of isn't the same as the one LR is thinking of, otherwise it would have imported with all changes intact.

Just to clarify something - is each mac accessing the same set of images in a central location from individual catalogs set up on each machine? Or does each have its own set of images locally, and both macs are independent of each other? It would help to know a bit more about the setup beyond your introduction in the original post.

All the RAW's are on one external drive networked mac pro and imac, the files in question have only been edited on the MAC pro.

When i rate the images they are then moved into 2 folders one set are edited on the imac and the other on the mac pro.

Any use.......

I can see the previews on the imac from when i rated them and it has the original file name, i cannot do anything with the files as the originals now the have this new name that is causing all the issues. Anyone fancy a trip to Marbella to fix it :mrgreen:

I'll come! ;)

Ok, let me check I'm understanding this.

You've got raw files.
You renamed the files - in this Lightroom catalog or outside?
Now the files are marked as missing.

Right so far?

Ok, so, do the files still have the same names that LR's expecting?
And if you change the Metadata panel view to 'All', can you see an 'Original Filename' and is it different from the current filename?

Hi Victoria,

About 9' degress today.........I have the RAW and renamed them within LR and they are marked missing correct.

I checked the metadata it shows the current filename and the original filename?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Erm, so Lightroom knows the correct file names (of the raw files), but when you try to relink the files, it says those files already exist? You mean when you click on the question mark and point them in the right direction?

Ok, silly thought... if Mohammed can't go to the mountain, why not bring the mountain to Mohammed? Where is LR expecting those files to be? Why not put them there and restart LR?

The files are still in there original place, and never been moved the folder is correct it is all very weird, my assistant is chanting your name in the hope you can save him from reediting.....

I can't move the files as they are where they should be.

Marbella. Nice. :p

Are you sure that the iMac hasn't touched the images in the networked location (I presume that you're on the Mac Pro)?

As you say that you an see both Filename and Original Filename fields in the Metadata panel it confirms what you said earlier that they were renamed - at what stage were they renamed?

I actually get the Imac ...... never mind, I edit the 3 or 4 thousand images on the Imac I put them into 2 folders one small edit of a 15o or so that I do and my assistant wil then import the online images and edit those, this has always worked really well in the past, one thing that might be of interest, when he renamed the files to save as jpeg he left a space between the names ie: 589emma gwyn.jpeg we have followed the same today with no problem?

There is a preference in the LR catalog that allows you to choose how to deal with spaces - I forget what the default is, but it'll either replace it with a dash or underscore, etc.

Have you tired to - or are you able to - synchronize folders on both machines, if the images are centrally located?

Ok, what if you move the files and try relinking them.... that could well work

The joys of using a beta, eh?

Hi Jeremy,

Could you please illaborate on how you fixed the issue, I'm having the same problem and haven't renamed or moved anything?
