I've noticed that when adding keywords in Lightroom, some words automatically default to all caps, even when I enter them as lower case. Also, if I try to capitalize the first letter of each word, it changes to lower case after I hit enter. Does anyone know how I can change or control this behavior?

Are you speaking of adding Keywords to the Keyword List or adding them to the individual images?
I suspect the latter. In that case, it means you may have the keyword listed in your master Keyword list already as all-caps.
Go to the Keyword List Panel in the RH Panel set and search for the keyword that is exhibiting the abnormal behavior. If that is the issue, let us know and I will tell you how to fix it.
If it is entering a keyword via the "Enter Keyword Dialog" from the clicking the Add button on the Keyword List Panel, I am stumped.

Hi,

Yes, I'm entering keywords into each image individually and yes, you're correct that the specific keyword was in all caps in the list. Can I clear this list and start fresh with all words starting with a capital letter? I dont want to wipe or refresh this list until I'm sure it won't remove the keywords from my existing photos and I don't want to go down the list changing each word one at a time. Ideas?

Go to Library and in the Catalog Panel, Select All Photographs. When your grid displays all photographs go to the Keyword List Panel and find the keyword that is entered wrongly. Click the Arrow to the Right of the Keyword to display only those items with that keyword.Select all with A Cmd A or Ctrl A (Mac-PC)Go to the Keywording Panel and locate the window that lists all your keywords for the selected images.Type in a temporary keyword that is unique and easy to find.Delete the incorrect keyword by backspacing it out.The grid should go blank.Return to your Keyword List panel and search for the temporary keyword.Click on the arrow to redisplay that group of images.Select AllIn the Keywording Panel type in the corrected keyword and then delete the temporary keyword.Repeat for as many bad keywords as you have.

I just tried it and it does work. Just find the keyword that is all capitals in the keyword list and right-click (or whatever brings up the context menu on a Mac), select Rename and type in your desired capitalisation of the keyword and hit enter. All images that had the all capitals keyword will now have the new one.

Won't renaming the keyword in the keyword list have the same effect and apply to all images with that keyword in one operation?
Yes. Rikk's method, while it works has the potential of removing a keyword form a large number of photos and losing that relationship. The Keyword rename should be the only method to het the Keywords named correctly.

I've figured out how to correct the problem per previous suggestions however, when I'm entering in keywords in the keyword box, it is referencing the keyword list which contains some words in all caps and most of the words do not have the first letter capitalized which I now want so, how can I enter in keywords without it automatically referencing the list and changing words like "Sunset" which I enter manually to "sunset" which is in the keyword list?
I think you need to "Fix" your keyword list first. All keywords are stored in a table in the database to be available to all images.
the Keyword "Sunset", is the Same as "sunset" or "sUNSET" when looked up in the database by LR. The capitalization of the one first entry is what is maintained by the DB until you edit the entry of the keyword tag in the keyword list. You can only have one entry for "sunset" in the database
A database search is not case sensitive. Likewise, in a hierarchical list "Summer>Sunset", Winter>sunset" & "Fall>sUNSET" will each have it's own unique entry in the database and each keyword will have a different "Parent" A search on "sunset" will return all three rows in the data base unless you specify "WHERE tag is 'sunset' AND parent is 'winter' " If you correct the capitalization of the keyword tag in the keyword list, it will affect the appeareance of that keyword in every image where it has been assigned.

You know, I wasn't aware of the Keyword Rename function. That is definitely the way to do it! Learn something every day. I guess I have the day off now!
If you have SUnset, and SUNSET and the correct term Sunset, will it let you rename two keywords to an existing keyword?

No, but there is an easy way to fix that case too.
[li]In the keyword list, click the arrow to right of the first incorrect keyword to display all images having it.[/li]
[li]Select all displayed images[/li]
[li]In the keyword list, tick the checkbox to the left of the correct keyword to assign it to the selected images. Make sure that the checkbox contains a tick mark; if not click again until it does.[/li]
[li]In the keyword list, delete the incorrect keyword referenced in step 1.[/li]
[li]Repeat steps 1 to 4 for each incorrect keyword to be merged into the correct one.
[/li]
Note that the list above should be numbered rather than bulleted, but the post editor is not handling numbered lists correctly.

I notice that you are representing parent child hierarchies as parent>child, which makes logical sense as parent is greater than child. However LR uses a child>parent notation when entering or displaying keywords duplicated in different places in your hierarchy. It took me a while to remember this seemingly reversed notation.

If you had a hierarchy containing
[pre] Fall
Sunset
Spring
Sunset
Summer
Sunset
Winter
Sunset[/pre]and inadvertently entered Fall>Sunset when keywording an image, you would accidentally create another Fall beneath the first matching Sunset in the list. Entering Summer>Sunset will do the same so after those two actions your hierarchy would contain.
[pre] Fall
Sunset
Fall
Summer
Spring
Sunset
Summer
Sunset
Winter
Sunset[/pre]

I can never keep > & < straight in my own mind. Much less in the Keywording panel. I probably should have illustrated my point as it appears in the Keyword List
Parent
Child1
Child2
or
Summer
sunset
Winter
Sunset
Fall
sUNSET

This is probably why I work my keywords only in the Keyword list panel and click on a checkbox at the left of each keyword. The keyword List panel also works best because I can click and scroll faster than I can type.

The syntax parent | child also works in the main Keyword Tags text box. This is much less useful since the advent of the smarter 'Click here to add keywords' text box.
