Noise Removal technique

I would be interested to hear how you remove noise in LR.

Here's how I work. I zoom in to 11:1 on a shadow area so I can easily see the color noise. At ISO 1''/2'' I normally find it enough to set the color noise slider at 12. So far no questions (if you have any comments about this method though, feel free to reply).

Now for luminance noise. To be honest I don't exactly know how to spot luminance noise. I don't see any changes to the photo unless I set the slider really high (>7').

How can I recognize luminance noise? Does every photo need luminance noise reduction, or only the higher ISO shots? What are the luminance noise settings you normally use?

I hope I put this topic in the right forum, with some help of you we could maybe turn this into a 'tips and tricks' topic, but I leave that up to the mods.
