Noise in CR2 files when imported to LR

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and I spent the entire day reading trying to find a solution to my LR issue. I thought it would be best to post to the forum:)

When using LR and importing CR2 files, all of them have a strange noise effect in them. All the dark colours (not just shadows, also the lit areas) show up very noisy and there's is no smooth transition between colours. Also the overall images don't look very clean. I thought it was an issue with my Macbook, but using LR on my very new iMac, the problem still exists. When I open the same files in Aperture there is no noise to be found and the images are very clean! I attached a few 1:1 screenshots of the images all shot at 1'' ISO and lit with (studio) flash. Picture 4 is LR and picture 5 is Aperture. Pic 1 is LR as well.

I'm suspecting that I must have turned on a wrong setting somewhere, but I'm hoping someone can help me out... I love Lightroom and am only using Aperture because I have to due to this problem.

Hi Pascalle, welcome to the forum!

For a start, try dropping the shadows slider down a bit - it looks like the shadows are blocked without detail.

I don't really see what you're describing, but anyway -- which camera profile have you chosen? (The first line under the "Camera Calibration" panel on the right in Develop.) Does choosing a different one have any effect on this?

Thanks for your answer Victoria! I moved the shadows slider and it does help somewhat, but it basically makes the noise less visible and doesn't remove it. But it does help!

Mark, the camera profile is set to ACR 4.4, I only learned about that today so I am still a bit clueless about the camera profiles. I tried changing them, but it makes matters worse. What I'm seeing in my images is as if I have shot the images in the dark, with noisy muddy looking dark colours. There is no smooth transition between the range of darker tones. My attachments were probably not the best option, I'll find a different way to show you the problem.

Thanks anyway and I hope there are more people who have an idea what's going on!

If you can upload the original file somewhere, and the results you're getting with both programs, then perhaps more experienced members could also have a play and see if we can come up with a better conversion for you.

Yay! I figured out what was causing the noise. It turns out that the profile I was using, created by my Spyder3, for some reason didn't sit well with Lightroom. Before I had calibrated my new display there was not a problem with my images and since the calibration there was. So I removed the profile and the Spyder utility and Lightroom shows my images like they should be. Now it's just a matter of figuring out what I'm doing wrong with the calibration. Thanks for all your help!! I'll be back here whenever I need a Lightroom answer :-)

Thanks for reporting back Pascalle. FWIW, it might not be the software - I'm hearing a lot more reports now of calibration pucks 'dying' and giving dodgy calibrations, so that could also be a possibility.
