No way to rename a photo?

I know how to rename a whole series of photos, but I can't see how to do the simplest thing - rename a file. Example...

Let's say I called them '1 Beach, '2 Beach, '3 Beach etc. But I want to then change the filename of the second one to "'2 Beach - Huge wave".

I expected to click on the name in Grid view and edit the name.

The only way I can see would be select the photo, press F2, select Custom text, then type the whole name again. I can find no way to simply edit the existing filename. I'm having trouble believing this, as it is an important part of how I work with photos - I like to put something meaningful in the name.

I could rename it in Windows, then Synchronise, but that would be slow.

Is there an answer or is this really a missing feature?

The batch rename is the way most people do it, but you can also rename in the Metadata panel for a single photo.

You can specify many parts of an original file name in setting up an F2 batch rename. IF you have a standard way you want to do this you can create a naming preset under Edit... in the dropdown of the F2 Dialog.

Brilliant, thanks. I was sure there had to be a way. This should be documented somewhere.

I still think you should be able to rename any file in Grid view by just clicking on the name. Or in any view with Right click/Rename for that matter.

I was able to rename a single file by clicking on the File Name box in the Metadata panel. Something changed and now when I click there it brings up the same batch rename box that F2 does. What did I do? I can't rename a single file!

Geez, I restarted LR and now it works again. The filename field is now editable. I'm confused! Oh, well at least I can get back to work.

That problem has a name - it's called 'general weirdness'. Restarting fixes the strangest of problems, so it's always a good first step.
