I have an album with photos that I would like to import to my Library. When I click on import, choose the file that I like to import, there are no previews to see. All grey square boxes with check marks that I can click to uncheck, but no images. It says that the images could not be read.
(these images were taken years ago, jpgs but other than that I don't see why I cannot open them?) I can open them outside Lightroom in preview or in Photoshop Elements, or in Bridge, but not in Lightroom. What is the problem?

HI,

Do you have the latest version(2.3)? I think if you have the time is to fill out the signature thing before you get a lecture from somebody.
It could be a file not supported by LR.
If it is not too many images, can you go ahead and import them? Once, you import them- you can always delete.

If they were JPEGs from Photoshop or other software, it's possible that the embedded preview is missing...

I've never tried this -- does anyone know what Lightroom does for Import previews if the embedded preview is missing?

To help us help you could you please take a moment to fill in your signature in the "userCP' that is found in the nav-bar at the top left of the page - thanks.
This is what Robert was meaning...

Enjoy!!;);)

As a hint, look at the descriptions below our names- you can see the details of the computers( except for Mark) and info(software) pertaining to LR.

Other info is quite optional so if you do not want to share- do not do it.

I am going off to work. Somebody will help you out today if you are still having problems.

If you're still having trouble, if you can upload one of the files somewhere, we should be able to identify why it's having problems.

It says "Preview unavailable for this image". It is possible to open them in Photoshop Elements or in Preview but not in LR2. I cannot import them. If I do it gives me the message "the following files were not imported because they could not be read"
That's all I have on information, hope it is clear enough to give you an idea.
The images are all jpegs btw.

JPEG is a non-issue. LR handles RAW(NEF in your case since you are using Nikon-good choice!), PSD, TIFF, DNG AND JPEG. Image size(in your case) is not the problem. Can I safely assume that your NEF(RAW) files imported fine into LR based on your newer thread? I hope they do because I am able to import my NEF's without any problems.

The only thing I can think of is that those files are corrupted somehow. Now, I am going way over my head. Someone else needs to take over from here if I am pointing cameragirl in the right direction.

I've heard of a few jpegs that couldn't import, but that was a while ago. Just try resaving in Elements and importing.

No problems at all to import NEF files into Lightroom. The files that I have a problem with were from a few years ago, take with a Canon 1'D. I have only these jpegs not the RAW files. Well it is not a really, really, big deal since I can open them in PSE. Its just that LR does not import them for some reason.

Just try resaving in Elements and importing- Victoria( sorry, I could not find the quote button so I copied and pasted instead)

Victoria- can you elaborate on this part? If LR is not recognizing her JPEG's in the first place, why would LR recognize the JPEG's second time around.

OK, I just figured out the quote button. No insults please! How long I been in this forum?

Some jpegs I was sent a while back wouldn't import into LR, but simply resaving them allowed them to import just fine. Not a clue why, but it's definitely worth a shot! I assume there was something non-standard in the formatting.
