No File Size Estimate When Exporting JPGs

Am I missing something? When you export an image to JPG, you can adjust the "quality" as a percent, but you have no idea about how large that file is going to be. Now, Photoshop shows you the estimated file size when you set the quality %. But in Lr, if you are constrained to, say, under 2''KB, it's trial and error, and very frustrating.

Or am I missing something?

Is there a way to find out the JPG file size before exporting?

I'm trying to move my workflow to Lightroom so I can do it all in one place. But this is really stopping me. Looks like I still have to use Photoshop when preparing images for my photo blog (I try to keep the file sizes around 25'KB).

Nothing's perfect (yet).

LR is, after all, all about batch operations. How do you display the estimated file size for each image in a batch of 1' or 1'' or 1''' selected for export? Perhaps more practical would be an additional sizing limitation beyond the resolution ones already present. So you can export images, constraining the longest side to say 8'' pixels and the resulting file size to 5''KB. LR could then apply the lowest compression to each image that will allow the resulting file to be no larger than 5''KB.

Batch operations would generally be a similar file size as they would have the same export parameters. This is provided they are all a similar file size to begin with...yes. Lr could do this for individual images, and for batch processes, give a range of values from all the files. Ie; smallest 5''px largest 1'''px

Not really. File sizes of JPEG images with the same dimensions and compression levels can vary fairly dramatically, depending on the level of detail in the images. Anyway, I think we're agreed that some form of this feature is needed. Whether it can be implemented in a similar way to Photoshop or whether it would be like the feature of LR2/Mogrify, remains to be seen.
