I am using the latest version of Lightroom Classic and I am importing 21 photos from a Nikon Zfc camera. Lightroom will import 15 of the photos with no issues but 6 photos received the above error message. You cannot later go and rename them as the 6 files are not actually there. I do see a preview. but that's all. The 15 that were imported can be renamed.

I have tried two card readers and I have the same problem. I even copied the files to the desktop and I have the same problem.

I have other Nikon cameras such as a Nikon Z8 and I have no problems importing and renaming photos. So, the problem is specific to the Nikon Zfc files.

The Nikon Zfc has a San Disk Extreme Pro 32gb, 95 mb/s SDCard.

Solution
Resetting the camera appears to have fixed the problem. I do not have any in camera special features on this camera beyond multiple exposure. THANK YOU.

The card itself might be bad. Is it just with this cared or do other SD cards have problems with the Zfc? Also make sure the images have not been write protected on the card.

I have tried three different cards, one from Lexar and two from San Disk. The cards are not write protected as i can download most of the images just not all. I can also import the photos to Nikon NX Studio and process them. So, there is a problem with Lightroom Classic.

Try copying the images to a folder using Finder. then import from that folder and see if there is an issue.

Still does not work.

The fact that you can import SOME Zfc images from the card but not others AND that copying the images to a local drive also fails, suggests that the problem is with the image files and not the card or LrC.

I’m not sure that is the case. I can import and export again from Nikon NX Studio, a proprietary raw editor. Lightroom is clearly the problem here. Maybe, I’ll try this issue on DpReview Nikon Z forum and Adobe Lightroom Forum too.

Adobe has always had a higher threshold for errors than other image software. That is why copying the file from the camera card to the local drive sometimes works.

As recently as last year Lightroom encountered an unexpected EOF when reading some NEFs. This may be what has happened to you. And this is a Nikon problem because the files are malformed.

Just to clarify, I can copy the files to the desktop of my Mac mini. I can also open and process them in Nikon NX View. Still baffling that this happens with only a few images on a card not all images. And, this behaviour is replicated on 3 other cards. I'll continue to investigate.

Does this always happen when you take photos with the Zfc (i.e. is it repeatable)? And is there a pattern to how many files are not readable? If you shot 100 images, would it just be a small number or would they be scattered about? And have you reset your Zfc?

Yes, it always happens. I have ignored it in the past. It involves between 2 and 5 photos out of 21. I’ll reset the Zfc and then check to see a) if the problem is still there and b) if it is still there, I’ll do 100 photos and check the results, Good suggestion to reset the Zfc. I’ll do this in the morning. Thanks

Resets can solve some problems, but not necessarily all of them. but it is good to rule that out. I was also wondering if the camera was doing something like a focus stack or a similar feature where it might be creating files that were meant to be processed in camera or with custom software. I do not know if you have tried Fastrawviewer https://www.fastrawviewer.com/ , but if you have it, you could see if the program reads the file correctly.

Glad to hear. I wish I knew what the problem was, but am glad that it is gone.
