I am moving my iPhone workflow from the Apple platform (Camera, photos, and Cloud) to Adobe (LrMobile & camera, Adobe cloud, LrClassic. I am comfortable with LrClassic. I want LrClassic to store, process, and serve my iPhone photos. I have gotten LrMobile and LrClassic set up so that photos taken on the iPhone, with either the Apple Camera app or the Lightroom app, show in LrClassic in the Catalog section "All Synced Photographs". I have some remaining questions and tasks.

My goal is a workflow that shows all my iPhone photos in LrClassic as complete and editable files. I want the LrClassic files to be the "record of truth". (I keep full backups.) I don't foresee any need to have the photos remain online (synced). I may edit and use them with LrMobile, but the workflow I (think I) want moves them all through and out of LrMobile, and into LrClassic.

  • If I run Lightroom in a Web browser window, is that what Adobe calls "Lightroom"? In this post I will call it "LrWeb".
  • New iPhone photos do not show in "LrWeb". Should they? They _do_ show in LrClassic.
  • Is there a way to have newly-imported photos auto-show in a Collection or Smart Collection? I want to to go into a holding bin until I process them to their proper Collections in my storage system.
  • Setting this up failed repeatedly on videos. I ended up deleting the videos in LrWeb (which just moves them to a holding object named "Deleted" from which they are available for 60 days), after which I was able to sync c. 5,000 photos. Can this workflow work with videos? (Video is minor but necessary in my work.)
  • I have 5,444 photos in "All Synced Photographs". LrClassic finished syncing them yesterday, but today … restarted? The Sync status jumps around, but stays within a few hundred of "Syncing 1, 500 photos". Is that OK?
  • Should I, and if so how, un-sync the c. 5,000 photos that I was able to import from my iPhone (and likely from Apple Cloud) to LrClassic? I do not see any need to have photos available on the iPhone for more than a week after recording them.
  • The Photos app on my iPhone tells me I have 10,000+ photos and almost 200 videos. How can I move all them to LrClassic? I do not know why the initial sync was only c. 5,000 images.
Thanks to the forum regulars for all the info I picked up here that helped me get as far as I have.

All OS's, apps, and programs are up-to-date. iPhone XS Max (iOS 15.3.1), iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017, OS 12.2.1 "Monterey"), was on the Adobe Photography plan but just switched to CC All Apps (because I keep signing up for AE when I need it and forgetting to cancel it when I don't).

  • If I run Lightroom in a Web browser window, is that what Adobe calls "Lightroom"? In this post I will call it "LrWeb".

That's what we generally call it, LrWeb.

  • New iPhone photos do not show in "LrWeb". Should they? They _do_ show in LrClassic.

Yes, they should show. The phone initially uploads to the Adobe LR server/cloud, and LrWeb gives a view of what's there.

  • Is there a way to have newly-imported photos auto-show in a Collection or Smart Collection? I want to to go into a holding bin until I process them to their proper Collections in my storage system.

There used to be a way to set the default collection for new photos in LrM, but I'm not sure this works nowadays.

I'd suggest a Smart Collection with criteria such as the camera and maybe x days.

It should work, but I also find video unreliable. So on the phone I export new videos to Dropbox, delete the video in LrM and import it from Dropbox to my catalogue.

  • I have 5,444 photos in "All Synced Photographs". LrClassic finished syncing them yesterday, but today … restarted? The Sync status jumps around, but stays within a few hundred of "Syncing 1, 500 photos". Is that OK?

Yes, eventually it settles down. It's probably syncing metadata rather than the photos themselves.

  • Should I, and if so how, un-sync the c. 5,000 photos that I was able to import from my iPhone (and likely from Apple Cloud) to LrClassic? I do not see any need to have photos available on the iPhone for more than a week after recording them.

I would, because it frees up space on the phone and in Adobe's cloud. I do this myself, and then sync from Classic Lightroom only those photos that I want to keep on the iPhone and iPad.

  • The Photos app on my iPhone tells me I have 10,000+ photos and almost 200 videos. How can I move all them to LrClassic? I do not know why the initial sync was only c. 5,000 images.

I'd probably just move them via iOS/Mac and not take them through LrM. Who knows what they are, and you don't seem to want them in LrM anyway. So treat them like a hard drive that you found at the back of the drawer and that you're importing into Lr separately.

They should definitely be there - be aware that you will need to reload your web browser page to see any updates, it won't just dynamically update with the latest images.

Thanks. Re-tested and they are now showing up in LrWeb and LrClassic. I think the issue with LrWeb was related to videos that would not sync. I had been toggling sync on and off, and moving video to the Deleted folder and back.

An important concept has fallen into place.
  • "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs" displays the contents of the LrCloud. Yes?
  • As does "LrMobile ▹ Library ▹ All Photos".
  • And also "LrWeb ▹ All Photos".
And in LrClassic, those synced photos are shown in the Grid with that sylized double-ended arrow glyph on the upper right of the photo border?
Is there any other indication or metadata that shows whether a photo is synced with LrCloud?

Un-syncing a photo removes it from LrCloud (what is this called here?) but leaves it in the LrClassic Catalog?

Un-syncing is done by removing the photo from "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs"?
Removal is done by deleting the photo in "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs"with the delete key (or equivalent)?

I assume if I move a photo into "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs", it will be uploaded to LrCloud and show in LrWeb and in LrMobile?

So LrCloud = "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs"

I won't be using LrWeb, but … is it just another viewer for LrCloud, or can it store photos that are not in LrCloud?

Yes, yes, yes (heard that somewhere before).

Probably, but too subtle to notice?

Un-syncing a photo removes it from LrCloud (what is this called here?) but leaves it in the LrClassic Catalog?
Yes. Do it in LrClassic.
Un-syncing is done by removing the photo from "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs"?
Yes. This also removes the photos from any synced collections. So an alternative is to unsync a collection.

Removal is done by deleting the photo in "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs"with the delete key (or equivalent)?

Yes
I assume if I move a photo into "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs", it will be uploaded to LrCloud and show in LrWeb and in LrMobile?
Yes, but it'll not be in a synced collection (album in LrCloud speak).

I would recommend putting photos in a synced collection as they're easier to find in LrMobile.

So LrCloud = "LrClassic ▹ Catalog ▹ All Synced Photographs"

I won't be using LrWeb, but … is it just another viewer for LrCloud, or can it store photos that are not in LrCloud?
Correct. It is the most-certain proof of what is in Adobe's cloud. It's a viewer for it.

No, it can't store anything else. But the CC Files folder in Finder, that is a Dropbox-like folder entirely separate from LR. You can store stuff there too, and it also counts against your 20Gb or whatever.

Bite by bite .
