I am a brand new Lightroom 2.5 user on a Windows XP machine. I connect my Canon Rebel Xsi and click Import. I select the date of the photos I want to import. After the progress bar reaches the end, I get a message saying "Failed to find a place for the imported file" and there are icons for 1' photos. I have tried several times with the same result (kind of like banging ones head against the wall).

Thanks for the speedy reply.

Here is what I see in the Import dialogue:

Copy photos to a new location and add to catalog
Copy to: C:\documents and settings\user\...\My Pictures
Organize: By date 2''9-12-17
Options:
All dates (162) - not selected
2''9-1'-'3 (152) - not selected
2''9-1'-'4 (1' - selected
Don't re-import suspected duplicates - selected
Backup to - not selected
Filenaming - Template: Filename
Information to Apply
None
None
Blank
Minimal

I have only selected the 2''9-1'-'4 files for import as the other folder does not include any RAW files.

A user on photo.net with a different name posted the same problem on photo.net earlier today. Interesting, as I've never heard of this before, then two in one day.

Can you create files in that folder outside of Lightroom? Trying to discern whether the problem is Lightroom or Windows.

At some point when I was installing LR (or maybe the first time I tried to get photos) I was asked to identify a catalogue name. I created a new catalogue in My Pictures, but there is also a folder called Lightroom with a single file called Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat. I switched LR to work with this catalogue instead of the one I created. I get the same "Failed to find a place for the imported file" message. I can add folders and files to the Lightroom folder, so I don't think it is a Windows problem. But, after the this last failure, there is now a file named Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat.lock that wasn't there before. I deleted that file and tried again. Got the same failure error and the lock file was not recreated.

What happens if you copy the raw files from the camera to a temporary harddrive location, and import from there, using the same 'copy to a new location and add...' setting? Or use a card reader, instead of direct from camera? (I'm grasping at straws, like Mark, this is a new one on me too....)

When I look at the list of files on the camera as a "device," all the files are listed with a JPG extension. I shot in RAW and JPG, so I have two files with the same file name for each photo. I know I can work with the JPGs in LR, but I want to learn to work with RAW files.

Photoshop Elements 7 recognizes the CR2 files are on the camera. I thought I would be clever and use PSE to get the files into a folder and go from there. PSE will not retrieve the files. I think I would have to install Camera Raw which really seems like the long way around when LR should import these photos directly.

I looked up the post that Mark referred to on photo.net. Someone there suggested perhaps the FAT is "full." My next move (when I am not quite so tired) will be to delete a bunch of old photos and try again.

In the meantime, if anyone has further suggestions, I am all ears.

I forgot about trying the card reader suggestion. I just did, and lo and behold, the photos imported. OK, I am happy, but I hope someone will be able to explain why it works from the card reader and not from the camera.

Thanks everyone for your patience and your help. I know I'll probably be back her with more questions in the future.

No one came up with official explanations of why this is a trouble with some combinations of computer and cameras. But one thing we do know for sure is that it is generally solved by using a card reader or copying the camera's content to the local drive first.

I've only had trouble trying to get XP to read directly from a Canon 45'D. Windows seems to guess that the CR2 files are really JPEG files (maybe based on there being aJPEG preview in them) and insists on calling them JPEG. But using card reader all is fine. I also generally prefer using a card reader so I don't have to have my camera around when importing pictures.
