New user - 2 problems encountered!

Hi:D

I am very new to LR, having used PSE 6 up until now. I'm using Scott Kelby's LR2 for digital photographers to help me.

There are three problems that I cannot get beyond, and I wonder if anyone can help.

The first is that everything is so horribly slow - well over a minute for each DNG photo (EOS 5D mk 2 so large files!) to download, and then more than a minute to render each picture to 1:1. For a major shoot this is going to be unworkable, and these times seem way beyond what Scott suggests. I have a feeling this may be to do with my PC, which is an Athlon 3''' XP processor with 2GB of RAM. I have read something about SSE2 being important, and I have a feeling my old processor may not work in this environment.

Secondly, despite having unchecked the box for Adobe photo downloader in PSE 6 'edit preferences', when I plug in the card my PC still loads downloader to try to install my pics to PSE catalog (I have rebooted and it persists). Is it possible that there is some conflict between PSE catalog and LR catalog that is slowing things down?

Finally (probably the easy one!) I don't like the way the folders have appeared in my Library navigator in LR2. They are in alphabetical order rather than listed in the logical 'tree' style that I am familiar with. This makes it harder for me to quickly find subfolders. Can I change this setting?

Alan, Welcome to the Forums.

1) There are many reports of 5D2 full raws bringing seriously maxed out hardware to its knees. Don't know if that's due to the size, or some other format specific issue. Adobe is aware, and on the case.

2) Have a look and see if apdproxy.exe is running at start-up. That's Adobe's autodownloader demon, and was likely installed by PSE. If so, kill the process, and disable it from running at start-up

3) I'm not sure if I understand what you're seeing. If you've just imported directly from lower level folders, Lr will have ignored higher level parent directories. If that's what you're missing try right-clicking on one of the lower level folders, and selecting 'Add Parent Folder'. If that's the key to what you're missing, work your way thru the rest of your tree. If not, can you provide more detail, or screen shots?

1. Will hope that Adobe can come up with something. In the meantime may have to return to PSE 6 as my organiser/editor as I think LR2 is unuseable

2. No, I've checked msconfig and startup and no sign of Adproxy.exe there. There is something called Adobe gamma loader. However, putting a new memory card in is still causing my PC to open both LR (in my card reader drive I have listed LR as the requested action under autoplay) and Adobe photo downloader. Most strange.

3. That worked a treat! I had imported the catagolue from PSE 6 (File/get photos from PSE/upgrade from PSE 6) which all seemed to work OK. However, having followed your recommendations I now have a 'normal' windows type directory stemming from 'My documents'.

On the speed issue, I know various pros who are using the lesser (sRaw?) formats, for situations not requiring max resolution.

If you're using a hardware display calibration system, I expect you'll want to get rid of the Adobe gamma loader as well. If you're using such a system, you may be double correcting your monitor profile.

Just to verify, if you did a file search, double-check the spelling of apdproxy.exe, while I find references to both spellings on the web, I believe this is the correct file name.

Thanks again Brad!

I found the solution to the Adobe Photo Downloader - when I installed PSE 6 on my PC a couple of years back, it installed it on top of PSE 3, rather than removing PSE 3. I opened PSE 3 and deselected the autodownload feature and that solved the problem! (I also uninstalled PSE 3!).

I also went into msconfig and disabled photoshopelementsdeviceconnect.

I don't really understand what you mean about hardware display calibration systems. I have no idea whether I use one or not - I haven't consciously installed one, but have no idea if such a thing comes standard with Windows on a new PC.

Then you don't have one. It's a device/software combination which will plug into your PC, usually USB these days. The software will show colors on the screen, and the gizmo will accurately read them, and create a 'monitor profile'. This helps ensure that your monitor has a fairly high degree of compatibility with other calibrated devices, think print labs, etc. Without an accurate display profile, you may be chasing your tail in making image adjustments. They'll look fine on your machine, but portability may suffer to various degrees.

Adobe Gamma is a software only approach to this, and suffers from serious limitations from the lack of hardware based measurement feedback.

When thinking about your future photography budget, you might want to consider one of these. Most photogs rate this very highly as a necessity. There are several threads on various options (starting under $1'' and going quite high) in our Equipment forum.

WojteG - my HD is 127GB, and has 71GB of this free!

Brad - thanks again for that. I will consider it. At least if working with RAW or DNG I can always process the pics (or re-process!) at some future stage when I am better equipped and educated (and more importantly, have more time!).

Another thing I have just noted from the Adobe web site is that LR2 requires an Intel Pentium 4 processor. A lot of computers have AMD processors, and I don't know how big an issue this is.

AMD should be fine, provided it's the generational equivalent of the P4 or higher. There was a compatability issue with one older AMD series, which I believe involved the SSE2 instruction set. I also think this was resolved in a dot-release of Lr at some point.

2 more questions:

What size is the ACR cache set to in Preferences? Bigger will help when returning to a file you've already viewed.

And where are the raw files stored? Internal or External?

5dMkII files are BIG and they aren't quick even on really high end software - but not just in LR - I've been using other well known raw processing software this week for some 5dMk2 files, and that was even more painful!

I thought about HD,but it looks like You have enough space on Your HD and is free more then 5'%.I agree with Victoria-first and easy thing to do is check Your cache in Preferences>File handling.
How big it should be?

rendering RAW files is highly CPU intensive so rendering a large file with a Single / Single Core processor will render your machine pretty un-useable until it finishes it's rendering. Multi CPU / Cores can help a lot as you continue to work while the rendering is being done in the background.

Thanks again! My cache is set at 1GB, and my files are stored internally on the PC. They are imported in using a built in card reader in my PC. Importing the same RAW files using PSE 6 is nowhere near as slow as into LR2, but then I am asking LR2 to convert them to DNG which might involve extra CPU useage.

I am still surprised at Adobe specifying Intel Pentium 4 on their system requirements. No mention of 'or equivalent'. No such specification for CS4 or CS4 extended (just 1.8GHz or faster). I have posted separately to seek clarification of this on the Adobe forum.

If you're in a hurry when importing Alan, you could import as their original format, and then select them in Grid view and use Library menu > Convert Photo to DNG and leave it to run the conversion in place at a time when you're not using the computer. I'd also increase that cache size, as that'll make it much quicker when applying Develop changes.
