Hi all,

I am a professional photographer and have recently upgraded my digital workflow so that I can offer tethered shooting from my Nikon D7'' to my macbook pro laptop. I recently purchased and loaded LR so I am very new to it. I did some research and found that I could shoot directly into LR via tethering with the aid of a free downloadable app called 'Studio Tether' which installs a LR plugin called 'Lightroom Tether'. It is working intermittently. Still working the kinks out. I haven't been able to shoot tethered and have the file automatically import into LR. An 'import' dialog box appears with each shutter release and I have to manually click the 'import' button in this box in order to import the file. I want to be able to keep shooting and have the files automatically download into LR. Has anyone used Studio Tether/Lightroom Tether? Am I missing a step in LR in order for the files to automatically import?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Best,

Dennis

Dennis, welcome to the forums.

No, you're not missing a step, I don't think. We have another thread running on basically the same topic, also affecting a Mac user. http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/index.php?topic=7747.' . I don't think the problem is solved there either.

Being Windows/Canon, I can't offer much other advice.

Hi Dennis, welcome to the forum!

I haven't tried that plugin, but if it allows you to upload to a folder on your computer, you could always set that as the auto-import folder to bypass the import dialog.

I have been trying to get this to work also. I don't get the import dialogue box like you, but it doesn't import anything either. I may just just set up LR to use a watched folder instead and not bother with the plugin.

Hi Victoria,

Thanks for the input. In LR, as far as I can see at this early point for me, there is an 'auto import' feature that you can assign a folder to. I have done this and 'enabled' auto import but I am still getting the import dialog box after every shutter release.
I'm in a conundrum at this point. I'm hoping it's not an issue with the 'Studio Tether' app or it's LR plugin. I want to try and avoid having to purchase Nikons 'Camera Control Pro' software as it is outrageously expensive and I've already laid out some pretty heavy green for LR.

Again, thanks for the input. I will continue to search for a workaround. :-)

Hi Badger,

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure how setting up a 'watched folder' only in LR would work? Would that allow for auto import?
My limited understanding of the tethering process is that one must have an 'intermediary' software between your camera and the software that you are importing into. Nikon Camera Control Pro is such an intermediary software but is quite expensive.
The software that I am currently using is a free download. Not sure how this is all going to shake out yet, lol. I'm doing a commercial shoot on location tomorrow and will be flying by the seat of my pants as far as tethering at this point. ;)

I have been playing with this as we speak and have had some success.

I'm using a D3'' in MTP/PTP mode and have enabled "System Preferences->Universal Access->Enable access for assistive devices" in the OSX prefs.

Start with LR & Studio Tether shutdown.
Start LR
Add a folder from within LR where you want the images to be captured (I put a folder called 'tether' on my desktop)
Select the plugin from plug-in extras in the menu
Set ST to point to the same folder and hit OK
Then connect and switch on your camera
Cancel the import dialog box that appears
Then with the folder selected in LR take a shot.

The import is pretty slow...

don't switch the camera on / off during the capture or it will start playing up and open the import dialog box when you take a shot (seems a bit temperamental)

Almost forgot ! the watched folder technique I was talking about....

You can set LR up to watch a folder. You can set ST up standalone (no plugin use) to download to the same folder, LR should then auto import from this. This is how you would use Nikon Camera Control also.
