I just replaced my 8 year old iMac with a new Mac Mini. My photos are stored on an external HDD and they too might be getting long in the tooth. My plan is to switch over to a Solid State Drive for them. My question is, would Lightroom work the same with exFAT formatted drives as well as APFS formatted drives? I thought that if I'm going to start fresh, I might as well format the drive so it could be read with a PC . thx

exFAT ought to be OK.

While the short answer is "yes". The more complete answer is Would you really want to limit your self to ExFAT? APFS, HFS+, and Microsoft's NTFS offer security not found in ExFAT.

NTFS vs exFAT vs FAT32, NTFS supports journaling, file compression and encryption, file permissions, and long file names, whereas exFAT and FAT32 don’t support journaling or encryption.
exFAT: Windows XP-11, macOS 10.6.5 and later, Linux, Android 13. Main file system for USB flash drives, SD/memory cards, and external HDD.
APFS features strong encryption, space sharing, snapshots, fast directory sizing, and improved file system fundamentals.
Unless you are needing to share the EHD with a Windows Computer, APFS would be preferred for a secure storage device for critical data.

Cletus, Thank you. Ironically, i just finished conversing with support at Backblaze and they discussed exactly what you mention here. Backblaze has features that would not be possible if i chose exFAT. thank you both for your replies.
