While I have been using LR since last October, most of my efforts have been around organizing my digital files, with the occasional editing of an image or two for printing. While I was primarily shooting JPGs from a variety of cameras before LR, the program’s raw converter, in conjunction with a Nikon D4', allowed me to move into raw in a somewhat easy manner. Now, my D4' is accompanied by a D3'', which fortunately came with a free copy of CNX 1.3. I have never been a fan of Nikon software, and CNX did not seem to be an exception to the rule. Like Nikon Scan before it, I find the GUI to be very awkward.

Nonetheless, a common sentiment often expressed is that CNX is preferred to LR for NEF to JPG conversion because of the results it offers. While I can understand the sentiment, and the possible preference for Nikon’s interpretation of their own raw data, I believe that LR also has the ability of offering up pleasing results. But, most of my experience with LR has been with single images, not batch processing. I am now finding that I need to convert batches of NEF images to JPGs for a variety of uses, like posting on the web. Unfortunately, most of my images are not shot in a studio under controlled light. I am therefore wondering about how useful presets will be for “quick”, but acceptable, conversion from NEF to JPG. And, most importantly, what presets are people using for the conversion of D4' and D3'' NEF files?

I know that there are some presets to mimic the D3'' camera settings at http://www.onethirdstop.com/ , but what “generic” presets have people been using for bulk processing of NEF photos? I will eventually create my own, but am at a loss for a good place, and methodology, to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My dam is about to burst on NEF files that people are requesting in JPG format.

Thanks,

--Ken

While this conversation seemes to have developed OT near the end of this thread: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/showthread.php?t=2396 , I was hoping that it could be continued here. Sean mentioned the presets at inside-lightroom.com , but I was looking for more "quick and dirty" presets that could be used on NEF files (or NEF files converted to DNG) when timelines are tight and many images need conversion. Does anybody have these types of presets that they are willing to discuss or share?

What about this thread?... There is also the "Search button" above.

Denis,

Thank you for the link. I read the thread, but the author never bothered to post the presets or talk about the settings used. And, they only apply to the D2''. I am sure that many people would like presets that mimic Nikon's, but I would also like to hear about what other presets people are using. I view presets like recipes, and I was hoping that people would share ones they have created, like what Sean referred to at inside-lightroom, but for more basic effects. And yes, I have searched, but found little definitive information about specific presets.

Hi Denis,

I thought that you were only referring to an internal search of this forum. I have tried web searches in the past, but it can be a bit overwhelming when you recieve as many thousands of hits as Google finds. Sorting through a large number of hits is often cause for eye strain! Thank you very much for posting these links. I will have a look over the next few days.

Sincerely,

You are missing our own Richard Earney's Inside Lightroom one of the older (long standing) collections out there!

Don,

Sean mentioned Richard's site in another thread that I referenced above. John has a Nikon color preset there that I want to try out.

Lightroom Presets hasn't been updated since the public beta of v 1, and doesn't contain any that aren't on Inside Lightroom (which were updated to work with v1).

I assume the site is relatively defunct.

Mind you I haven't updated in ages and I have hundreds to post!!!!

I've moved Denis' 'big' list to tips/tricks:

Finding LR Presets

Please follow up with additonal site suggestions there.

I'll try to reconcile the few additions in this thread to Denis' post.
This thread is closed to additional posting.
