NEF files not importing

I am new to Lightroom and RAW files, and hoping someone will be able to help me out...
I have 2''+ RAW (NEF) files on my memory card, and when I go to import them into Lightroom, the pictures do not show up in the import preview window and when I select "Import" a message comes up later saying something like "file type unsupported or damaged". Why is this?

What camera are the NEFs from, your profile shows LR 1 and this will not support a lot of newer cameras.

You can update your profile by: look at the upper tool bar which starts with Home and ends with Logout. click on Profile> modify profile> in put your information. As for the camera info, you can free text in the signature.
