Need Help Creating Default Catalog On Ext Drive

Please Help! I am trying to create the default catalog on my external drive so I may access it from either my desktop or my laptop.

Some background, first. I have created a permanent letter (Z-drive) for my external drive through Microsoft Management Console (MMC) so as to have consistency when I switch drives between desktop and laptop. By default Windows always assigned a different drive letter before I initiated the MMC change. The computer would always be looking for the wrong drive when trying to locate the default catalog.

Now to the problem. I have deleted the default Lightroom 2 Catalog from my C-drive. When I try and create a new default catalog on my Z-drive the error I get reads:
" Lightroom cannot use the catalog named "Lightroom 2 Catalog" because it is not writeable and cannot be opened. "

I thought it was reasonably straight forward to set up my system so I could store my data on the external drive, but I guess I was wrong.

Any help would be appreciated. :?

Hi Ambe!

Does the same message appear if you try and create a catalog of a different name on the external drive? Do other applications have any difficulty creating files and directories on this drive? I would first examine the drive to be sure everything is set on it and in the OS to allow you to write to it. Double check the ownership and permissions.

If LR is having an issue with that particular catalog name then just use another one and tell LR on each of your systems to use that as the default catalog.

Gene, I believe you hit the nail on the head! I had not created write permission on the new drive. I tried saving a Word document to it, with the same result. As soon as I changed the permission everything fell into place.

Thanks. It's my Christmas wish come true. I've got a few days off work to try and get this Lightroom thing understood! I can get on with it now.
