I just started using LR today, and am hitting a bump. I have my pre-LR photos in a folder on my Mac OS X Desktop. Within that folder are folders from a photo class, titled "Class 4 contact sheet," "Class 5 contact sheet," and so on. When I clicked "Photos" (the main folder) to import it into LR, instead of seeing all 114 photos, I got four copies each of only about 23.

Of these, only a few from each of the subfolders appeared in LR (in fact, only two out of 36 from the "Class 5 contact sheet" folder appeared. When I retried the import, I got the message that all the photos had already been imported. But where are they?

The originals in my "Photos" folder on my Desktop are in both CR2 and JPEG.

Thanks for any help or new pathways anyone can provide.

Check the file names. There may be some duplication. This has happened to me before as well. You may have to change some file names or perhaps others will advise on a better way.

Have you tried to import one of the sub-folders like Class 4 contact sheet and see what happens?

How are you importing? Are you trying to copy thes files to a new location or just letting LR catalog the files?
In the import dialog, there is a file handling option: "Add Photos to catalog without moving". This should be the choice if you are adding photos to LR that already exist on your HD. Only if you are adding files from removable media should you copy the files to a new location on import.

Only if you are trying to copy duplicate file names from different folders into a commpn folder will you run into difficulties during import. Even when attempting to import duplicates you will get a warning message advising of the duplicates.

I did the importing just as I described it above. The "Import Photos Without Moving" is already checked.

As for file names, I'm not sure how to answer that. I clicked File > Import Photos from Disk > Desktop > Photos [the name of my folder on the Desktop] > Choose.

Yes, I did try to import one of the subfolders by itself, and got the message that the photos 'already exist in the catalog," and "The following files were not imported because they could not be read. (24)" I don't know what that last statement means, and there is not list "following" the statement, so I don't know what can't be read or why. (These statements aren't links, so clicking them doesn't do anything.)

When I click "Show in Library" at the bottom of that little announcement window, only a few of the 36 photos in the original folder appear.

Lightpainter7,
This is in reference to your folder with 36 images: Are there 24 or 12 images imported? I am guessing you have 12 images imported and the 24 were not.
Try this: repeat the whole process but this time: un-check Don't re-import suspected duplicates. Hopefully, all 36 images should be imported. So, you should see some duplication and delete them from LR( not from the disk).

PS: I do not know why there is no reason given( "they could not be read").
