my LR will not sort by capture time

I'm using LR 2.6, and I can't get it to sort by capture time for a particular set of about 16'' photos. I had files from two cameras imported, both had time/date incorrect because of time zone and, even then, off-synched by about 12 minutes, but I corrected both to the correct time, and within the correct synch of each other, under Metadata->edit capture time.

Now, though it's mostly in order, there are distinct areas, usually in small groups from the different cameras, where they are still out of order (e.g., metadata "date time original," "date time digitized," and "date time" is the same on each single file, but there are photos taken 5 minutes before appearing after the photo in the library). For example, there's a group of 6 photos with a time of 1:54:xx that are appearing after a group of photos with a general time of 1:58:xx. I've confirmed that the date/day is the same and correct, so not sure how else to get it the correct order. As this affects many files in many places, I don't want to individually move them to the correct order (and can I live with it? I suppose, but at this point, it's a principle thing, and I want to know how to get it right).

There are NO filters applied at all.

No matter what I do (either through view->sort->capture time, where the only other checked attribute is "ascending" or using "sort by: capture time" on the tool bar, it won't change the library order.

I can even deliberately move files out of order, and when I select all, don't select all, select the folder on the left menu bar, etc, and try to apply the sort, it won't change it.

why won't it resort by capture time for me? It's mostly in the right order, but not completely. Very frustrating. Thanks in advance for any help figuring this very frustrating bit out!

I should add two things:
1. These particular files are .jpg, in a folder with mostly .jpg and 1'% .dng, if that matters.
2. I also tried to get it to work when I moved a file amongst a string of similar files. 3 files from same camera, taken within minutes of one another. for simplicity, name1.jpg, name2.jpg, and name3.jpg. In the library, if I move name2.jpg in front of name1.jpg, so that it appears name2, name1, name3. But no matter what, it will not resort in order when I choose to sort by capture time or by name. whether they are highlighted or not. I would think that it should correct itself in either of those two scenarios (by time or by name) to name1, name2, name3, but it does not. The only way I could get it to go back to name1, name2, name3 was to click and drag. The sort commands were useless. Am I doing something wrong?

I recently had a problem with sorting by capture time. I found I had to reverse sort them and the sort them again and this did the trick. It was like LR wasn't re-sorting them by time because it thought they were already correct. By reversing the sort order and then back again it kicked back to life. Not sure if this will help you though.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I actually tried that...sorted descending then tried to resort ascending. Tried to sort by different parameters, then resort by capture time. Always the same. It's the weirdest thing. And what makes it weirder, to me at least, is when I manually put a few pics out of order, then try to sort by capture time, it won't touch my manual disordered pictures...

Thanks, though. Anyone else? I can't be the only one this has happened to, or is there a preference/setting that I unwittingly have selected that would prevent the sort from overriding manual disordering?

Are you doing this in a folder or a collection ? I didn't think you could manually re-order the images unless they are in a collection. having said that you should still be able to re-order by capture time in a collection.

I have the same problem: I am unable to get LR to sort by capture time or filename (which in my case, should give the same result). I have also tried reversing the order of sort, selecting all, deselecting all. Nothing works.

I'm working with a folder view.
Since I posted my comment, I have a theory that might explain the issue - namely the existence of a stack within a folder. I just looked at the folder that was not sorting, and today it is. I believe that there was a stack in the folder, and that I unstacked it. Assuming there was a stack, I know that I had expanded it prior to attempting the sort. In other words, I believe the problem occurred in folder view which had one or more expanded stacks in it.

In that case, it is sorted by the photos on the top of each stack, and others in the stack follow their leader, even if that puts them out of order overall. So it could appear that it's refusing to sort.

I also sometimes have troubles sorting by capture time, and I've heard about this problem on more than one other forum as well. I have a theory, albeit a bit technical, and sometimes I know just enough to get into trouble but not enough to get out:

- I assume Lightroom uses Lua's table.sort function to sort photos by capture time, passing it a comparison function to get the work done. If, for any reason, that function fails, the photos will remain unsorted. More things than you can imagine may cause that function to fail - in particular, I've noticed that Lr3b2 will sometimes yield within the function that gets the capture time - that's a no-no.

I have a plugin that uses the above mentioned method for sorting by capture time and it has the same problem Lightroom itself does - coincidence?

Recently shot a wedding using 4 different cameras. All of the camera (nikon d 3'', 7'' & cannon eos 4'd) images will sort according to capture time, the images from the Cannon eos 1-d mark IV will not. Does anyone have any tricks to getting the Mark IV images to sort into the appropriate capture time? Thanks
