Multiple downloads from same card

In order to save time, I download cards between sets or clothing changes. Each client has 2 CF cards, and I switch them back and forth?one is in the camera while the other downloads.

In the past, I downloaded first, then uploaded into LR. But I thought, why not use the LR import from the card? Because there is a place to tell LR not to import suspected duplicates, I thought I wouldn't have to manually select which images to download if the card already has images on it from the previous set.

Well, that works, but it really slows down the import. It's like LR goes through the download process, looks at it, then moves on. It doesn't (doesn't seem like it, anyway) just match up filenames prior to doing the import and not download those that have already been downloaded.

So as I fill up a 4 gig card, the imports slow to a crawl. The workaround is, of course, manually selecting just the ones to import, and that is what I do. But if the "Do not import suspected duplicates" worked a little differently, this would make for a smoother, less hands-on workflow.

Because of a little camera feature called "reset numbers", we have to check both name and creation time (and file size, if I remember rightly). To check creation time, it takes a little longer, because (if memory serves) LR checks the creation time in the metadata, not on the card. (the metadata one is more certain to be accurate, and match the time in the database of an exisiting image.)
