My library shows two or three copies of every photo. The photos are not duplicated on the disk. How do I fix this?

One way to prevent this from further occurring, if this is the cause, is to check the line
Do Not import suspected Duplicates, or a similar phrase.

You can otherwise just remove from LR any known duplicates. If Cmd/Ctl R takes you to the same image on your HD they are true duplicates.

Note that when 'Deleting' images from LR, you will be given an option to just 'remove' the selected image from LR's database/catalog, or to truly 'delete/trashcan/recycle bin' the file on disk.

Do those duplicates have a little page curl effect on the thumbnails by chance? Had you been creating collections before that happened? It sounds like they could just be virtual copies?

How it might have happened

I had to do a full restore of my hard drive from a backup due to a virus that I contracted. It might have happened then. There are no 'curls' on the copies, and there are no duplicates on the hard drive. The duplicates are only in the library.

I'm using a PC, XP SP2, and Lightroom 2.',
2 GB memory, with a 2'' GB primary HD, and a 1 TB SATA drive (where photo files are stored)

How many files are we talking about Geoff???

Does sorting by import date divide them into different groups that could be managed to delete the duplicates?
Or sort by filename?
Trying to achieve two distinct groups her for easy deletion.

Or have you tried synchronising a folder as a test, this may come up with the duplicates and ask if you want to delete them.
