I am about to move my photo operation from Windows XP Service Pack 3 using LR 1.4 to a 2.8 GHz iMac.

I have also purchased, but not loaded the LR 2 Upgrade.

When I move to the iMac, should I use my original LR 1 disk to install and upgrade to LR 1.4, then add the LR 2 upgrade?

Or, should I just load the LR 2 upgrade alone on the iMac?

I have LR disks for all these things.

IIRC when I installed my LR2 upgrade, it simply found my existing 1.4 install, and was happy to continue on that basis.

However, it is my understanding that if the LR2 upgrade install can't find a 1.4 install, you will simply get prompted for your LR1.4 serial number/code, rather than having to install 1.4 first.

This was on Windows XP, but probably reasonable to assume it's the same on a Mac?

HTH,

Conor

Conor, Welcome to LR Forums. Thanks for the input. I believe you're correct, either a registered 1.x installed version, or a valid 1.x serial number, in combination with a valid 2.x serial number is required.

You will need to move the catalogs over of course and they will be upgraded. Remember to back them up or make a copy of the catalogs first - just for safety.

And one other point, to save some frustration...

When you switch operating systems, LR will very likely be unable to find the correct path for the photos, splattering question marks all over the place. If you have hundreds of top level folders, relocating each of those missing folders will be a pain, so before you move, make sure you've set the folders panel to show a sensible hierarchy with only a few top level folders.

Thanks to everyone. I think I will install the upgrade and use the numbers requested as suggested.

I am not going to move catalogues. Mine are in disarray from ignorance in how to us LR in the first place.

I have all "negatives" in a central place, and most that are important to me are on one topic. So I'm going to use this opportunity, after reading Kelby and Evening's books, to completely reorganize and rename my files, taking advantage of LR's convenience.

Thanks to all for this valuable resource.
