Moving pictures around my hard drives

Hey all,

I have about 7'gb of pictures, all of them on my laptop hard drive. I want to move some to an external so that I have more space on my laptop, because the way it is right now I only have about 15gb of free space, and no more space for any more photos. what would be the easiest way to offload about 3'-4'gb of photos onto my external hard drive? I've looked in LR and I couldn't find anything that would let me just move the files and then have LR change it's reference to them. the easiest way I can think of is having LR write all of the changes into XMP, and then manually remove the pictures from the catalog and then re-import them. The only problem I'm having with this is when I tell LR to write all changes to XMP, I can click on a photo, and it'll still ask me if I want to write changes into XMP. how do I force LR to completely write all changes? When I view my pictures in Bridge some of them do have the changes, and some of the photos don't.

any help would be awesome.

So simple you won't believe it!
Create a dummy photo a the root folder of the external drive from where your folder's structure will start. Import just that photo into Lightroom. Now, FROM WITHIN Lightroom, drag the folders you want to move to the folder representing the external drive.

This is it! ...and welcome.

I had unexplicable problems with this method. Rather than moving the old folder to the new folder on another drive, it instead moved the folder to within the same folder. I tried again and the entire folder disappeared, and I was happy I created a copy first (as I don't trust any software with 'moving files').

Let me suggest a safer method that is just as easy:

(1) Outside of Lr, copy the files to the new location ...
(2) Rename the old folder, and Lr will not be able to find the original ...
(3) Start Lr, and the folder should show red in color (missing files!)
(4) Right-click the Lr folder and "find missing files" ...
(5) Point Lr at the new folder, and voila! ...
(6) Delete the original folder.
