Moving Photo Files and Updating Lrcat

Dear Gurus,1.)
I'm reorganizing several HDDs and need clarification about how to update the Lightroom catalogue. I don't think that the Synchronization, or "Find Missing Files" features will be able to locate the moved files so, how can I tell the catalogue where the files have been moved to? There is lots of info on the Adobe site about moving files "within" a volume but not from one volume to another.
2.)
A slightly different problem would be to move the catalogue AND the photo files to another volume. How best to do this? Would this be a job for the sync feature? Thank you.

(1) There are two ways to do this -- in Lightroom or in the Finder. If you move the files in the Finder, do it while Lightroom isn't running. Then fire up Lightroom, right-click on the top-level missing folder(s), and choose "Find Missing Folder" or "Update Folder Location". Not sure why you say you think this wouldn't work. I do it all the time as a regular part of my workflow.

If you do this within Lightroom, just drag the folder hierarchies from one volume to another. If the new volume isn't initially visible, put one photo on it and import that photo. You can delete it later, this is just to force Lightroom to recognize its existence.

(2) There's not much difference between this and (1). After moving stuff, open up the moved catalog. It may automatically find the folders, but if it doesn't, right-click the top-level missing folder(s) as above.

Yes, I did as you pointed out and it did work. I think my error was in not actually pointing Lightroom to the moved files by clicking on the new HDD in Finder. Doing the obvious sometimes solves the mysterious. Thanks
