Moving Images between folders

In LR 1.x I would bring my images into a TO SORT folder than move them to different folders after that. But in LR 2.' when I select the images and then right click a folder on the left and tell it to move the images to that folder it tells me I will no longer be able to edit the original.

I don't remember this happening in 1.x, am I doing something wrong?

Jimbo, Welcome to LR Forums. No, simply moving the images from folder to folder shouldn't affect that.

PC/Mac? File types (raw, jpg,etc). Internal/external drives ? New LR catalog or import/upgrade from 1.x ? Exact wording/screen capture of warning message? The more details, the better.

The window that pops up says...

Moving a File on Disk

This will cause the corresponding file on disk to be moved. If you proceed, neither this move nor any change you've made prior to this can be undone.

Check box for "don't show again"

Buttons: MOVE or CANCEL

If I move one, it shows it in the directory I moved it to, but still shows it in previous imports.

That's a scary warning for more or less no reason. In this instance all it means is that Lightroom will be unable to 'undo' the operation by pressing crtl-z, or selecting Undo on the menu. You will still be able to use LR, to move it right back where it was previously, etc.

I'm going to tell you something you probably already know, just to explain why that message appears. When you move a file in Windows (other machines too, probably) different procedures are used whether the new location is on the same drive/partition or a different drive/partition. If the file is to remain on the same drive, the move is treated basically as just a renaming of the file, and happens extremely quickly, because the file itself is not actually moved, (only the c:\.....\.....\....\myfile.raw part is changed). When moving to another drive/partition, the file is actually copied to the new drive, and deleted from the old drive; and the actual copying takes a significantly longer time.

I believe that LR gives the warning only when moving from drive/partition to drive/partition, but not when moving within the same drive.

'Previous Import' is not a location, so much as a 'collection', which has a special meaning to LR. Its contents will not change, until you begin another import process. This has the advantage that you can sort your images into various folders as you describe, and still keep track of the most recently imported.

Hmmm. Then I don't know. (Maybe I've already checked the "don't show again box")

I don't think it's anything to worry about, you're not going to lose your edits or anything.

Right, you won't loose any edits.......but am I just not wanting to let go? As far as ever going back to the original RAW's?

Minor correction: LR ALWAYS gives that warning, even on intra-drive moves, but the overriding point is your first one; you can always move again, including back to the original location. In this respect it's very much like the warning that you get when you do a time stamp correction.

Part of the confusion in this thread is probably because Brad lost a word up there -- Lightroom is warning you that it will not be able to undo the operation. But that's all it means. Nothing will be lost, and you will be able to "undo" it by hand by just moving it back if you want to.

I think that the confusion lies in this. I believes the warning is saying that you be unable to undo it using "Undo" from the edit menu, and that it will also interrupt "History" in the Develop Module. It is not saying that you can't do anything you want manually.

My biggest concern is once I move the image(s)...........Will I be able to revert back to the original RAW file as if it just came out of the camera?

I don't remember this prompt even coming up in 1.x.
