More Shortcuts please!

I would love it (and I think many others would as well) if Adobe allowed for more functions in Lightroom to be keystroke-driven.

I'm a big "shortcut" person and hate having to drive my mouse around to functions, like assigning presets, choosing Exposure +/-, etc.

I know that there's a plug-in (RPG keys) that will do all that for me, but after spending tonnes of cash on Adobe products, I would love for Adobe to give us some of the flexibility in Lightroom that currently exists in Photoshop.

pboge, welcome. While Lr's shortcut keys are not customizable, here's a couple of lists of keystrokes that you may not be aware of....

Would be nice to have shortcuts for the presets though, since it's the function I use the most!

I'd agree with you Patty, there are still a few shortcuts I'd like to see too. I think they're starting to run out of keys!

Hey Victoria,

if even you agree, then it's definitely an issue... Perhaps letting us create custom shortcuts for the presets that we use most often would already be a huge step in the right direction... I love automation, so the more "one clicks" I can do the better.

Patty, what do you mean when you say you want shortcuts for presets. In the Library or Develop module? How would you envision this working? I have over 1'' presets so I don't think a key for each is possible.

Warning! Following for Windows only.

I have a program that works in Library module only. Instead of using the LR drop down to show the presets, which is very slow and hard to navigate, it uses its own dialogs. The first dialog shows groups of presets that are user defined: a group that contains all the temp and color presets, a group for HSL, a group for vignettes, a group for black and white, and so on. Select a group from the first dialog and a second dialog appears listing all of the presets you have put into that group. Double click the preset you want and it is applied. The first dialog can be called by a shortcut. I use something like Win-x. (Win is the Start key between alt and ctrl). This is still not fast, but faster than LR.

An alternate version has only one dialog and lists only the top 2' or so of user selected presets from the whole list. This is faster but you do not get all of the presets, only the ones you deem important.

The main drawbacks to the program are that the user has to create the groups. I have made an editor that simplifies the task but still if you change presets frequently keeping the program up to date is a pain. Since I don't use presets much, I prefer to use LR's implementation in Develop so I can see the previews.

I intend to release this program eventually. Currently my computer is very dodgy and I can not determine if the program is fast and stable enough because the computer is so slow. In other word I can not tell if errors are from my computer, the program, or the way LR works. I will be getting new computer in the near future and then I will test and release (free)

The screen shots show the fist dialog of groups and the second dialog shows the presets that are in the black and white group.

Hey Larry, I've actually been meaning to get in touch with you. I've seen your threads on another blog (Gordon's techie or something rather...), and I was very interested in your ideas, since you're working with LUA, right?

See, I'm on a Mac and I know that there are options for Mac out there, since RPG keys did it.

What I was hoping from Adobe is for an option to program say your favorite 1' presets into shortcuts or something.... Not too much, just enough to get a decent workflow going.

Too bad I'm not using Windows... But at the same time, Macs are sweet...

Keep me posted on your progress anyway. Sounds really cool.

Using AutoHotKeys, not Lau. Have taken a quick look a Lau but it did not seem to hook in with develop functions, mostly aimed at database and web. When I get new computer I will look into this further. Another language to learn!

I am kind of in a limbo here. Out in the sticks caring for my ailing mother. I can not leave the house to do any shopping and I really need a new computer. Have the money but no access to anyone I trust who builds custom.

If you only need 1' presets, I have a method I used for cropping. It uses numbers sort of like the keywords implementation in LR. Press the shortcut key. A info box, not dialog - can not make selections from it, appears indicating which presets are assigned to which number ('-9). Press the number, the info box vanishes and the preset is applied. Very quick. Limited to 1' presets but you could have several of these assigned to different shortcuts, each with its own group of presets. This is fairly simple to implement, but again the user would have to program the presets to the numbers. I would write an editor to do this.

Larry, first of all, sorry to hear about your ailing mother, hope she recovers soon...

Very interesting ont he shortcut thing. Are you saying that the program you're writing in AutoHotKeys does this or is this a current lightroom feature? If it's a current feature what's the shortcut for the steps you've outlined?

The first screen shot is of LR's keyword with the alt key held down. Notice the numbers next to the keywords. Press a number and the keyword is applied.

The second screen shot is for my cropping program used in Library module. It shows the info screen overlaid on LR's windows. The first number is the one you press for a particular crop indicated by the second set of numbers. Press a number and that crop is applied. The last entry takes you to the develop module in crop mode.

Could do the same with presets. The info screen can be much larger. A vertical list with a number-preset description on each line. Two key sequence. Win-somekey to bring up info. Number to apply preset.
