1. The whole ratio cropping is alien to me. Inside of Bridge CS3 I used inches instead of ratio. If I wanted a 11x14 print then I'd just set the custom crop to 11" x 14". Is ratio better, worse, or no different?
I personally think it's better. By cropping with ratio the images are always cropped to the maximum size (pixels). Whether you need a small print or a large poster, you only have to crop the image once (as long as you don't use different crop ratio's). When you want to print an image you will only have to export it and that's all.

Bridge CS3 is binding two operations into only one: It applies a ratio and then a given number of pixels per inches to give it dimensions.
Lightroom is doing those operations in different modules: The cropping in Develop applies the ratio part while dimensions are only given at export time.
As Dirk pointed out, the advantage with Lightroom is that you are not stuck with an image of a given dimension. With the same image, without having to crop again, you can Export or Print any size (read inches) within the same ratio ex: 4" x 5" or 8" x 1'" etc. For different ratios of the same image, just use virtual copies.
