Montages in Lightroom

Occasionally I need to join two or three photos into a single image. I believe I can do this in Lightroom in the Print module by printing to jpg, but it doesn't seem to give me the control I want. I know I can do this reasonably easily in Photoshop, etc, but I'd prefer if I could do it in Lightroom if possible.

I need to be able to join them with just a little gap between them, and no borders. Sometimes the photos might be one in portrait orientation and one in landscape orientation, so I'd be scaling one so that its short edge matches the length of the long edge of the other.

I've tried setting a custom paper size that they should fit on (8.67 x 4 for 2 6 x 4's in opposite orientation), but there seems to be no way to individually scale them on the sheet.

Too hard for Lightroom?

Just to be clear, this seems easy if all the images are the same orientation - it's the mixtures that are hard. Here's an example:

I haven't tried this myself but I do believe this will be easier in the LR3 print module. You could download LR3 Beta and try it. I wouldn't recommend doing your real work in the Beta but creating some montages just at the output stage of your workflow would be fine.

Thanks for the quick reply, I already have v3 Beta loaded, didn't think of trying it. Yes, they've added a "custom package" that lets you resize each photo individually. It's a little fiddly to get the arrangement right, but not bad. It's a pity you have to work in length measurements, not pixels.

The next issue is that the jpg file it produces is blank, but I guess that's a question for the Beta forum.

If I get this working, do you know if the 3 Beta version will interfere in any way with my v2.5 installation and catalog? Will it try to share the catalog and previews, etc, or is it all independent? I notice that it won't launch 2.5 when 3 is already running.

Wow, that's even better than v3 Beta! Summary, for those who can't be bothered watching that video or finding the posting he's talking about:
- in LR 2.5, I selected two photos in different orientations, and went to the Print module
- I select Picture Package, and (I think) the supplied 4x5 contact sheet template, and saved it as test
- I edited C:\Documents and Settings\loginname\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Print Templates\User Templates\test.lrtemplate to change "oneImagePerPage = true," to "oneImagePerPage = false,", saved it and restarted Lightroom
- Now I can see the two selected images on the sheet and I can select each one one and adjust their sizes individually.
- I had to change the page size to 4 x 8.7 to get no borders
- AND there's the desired result in the resulting jpg
Just what I wanted, thanks a lot. I think the credit for this solution goes to someone called Enzo, so thanks to him too.

It seems there's one further thing I have to do after I've got the pictures set up how I want them, and that's to save the settings by right clicking on the template and selecting "Update with current settings". I was thinking that if I was using a template and made changes, they'd be saved to that template, but they are aren't.
