Missing photos not missing

Hello all, hope spring (or fall) is arriving in your neck of the woods! A search of the forums brought up some similar issues but not quite the same problem as I'm having. When I synchronize a folder or group of folders, I have a number of photos "missing." However, they don't have the question mark in the Grid view, and Lightroom will point to them in the Finder. If I remove them from the catalog and sync, it doesn't offer to re-import them, but I can drag them to the Lightroom icon & get it to import them. Then it shows them missing again! There are other photos in these folders, so I haven't changed the folder names. They happen to be jpgs. I have no problem with flagging, keywording, developing, etc.
I'm stumped, as most of the reports of this issue have the question mark on the grid view. Your thoughts?

Wow! I have .tifs with the same name in those folders, but no raw files. Shall I rename the offending files & see what happens?

You're right, checking that preference eliminated the problem. I had recently changed it and so hadn't had the issue before. In the past I had scanned old family history images as TIFFs and then produced derivative files & stored them in the same folder. Storing those jpgs in their own folder or changing the filename if I save them should do the trick.
