missing history collections

I have used lightroom since it was launched. I store all orignal images on a lacie external HD As I add files to the HD I load the files into collections with a unique number and name. I work within Lightroom and photoshop CS3 to modify certain images with in each collection. I have found that a number of these collections no longer have images in them only the collection data remains in the collection list. I back up monthly so how do I locate the missing files. Or do I have to import the orignal again and rework the image using version 2?? Anyone have any suggestions on what I may have done wrong. :evil:

Did this happen after an upgrade?
