Missing catalogue

When I opened my LR (version 5) all images had an exclamation mark on them and it opened a catalogue that had about a years worth of activity missing - any thoughts on where I should start sorting this out...I can't find my most recent catalogue anywhere.

And you have used Mac Finder to search for all *.LRCAT files?
And where are your Catalog backups stored?
