Missing and offline

Long post. My apologies, but I'll try to include the entire sequence of steps and missteps:oops: that I took.

I'm a new LR user, using 1.4.1.

I've been working on about 1''' photos, (most RAW) from several locations on a 1' day trip. I made some folders (named by location) in LR based on the date and did not change any file names.

Then worked with them in Develop and renamed those that I wanted to use in a slideshow on some photo hosting website.

Realizing that some of the photos were not in the right folders (central Serengeti elephant was in the northern Serengeti folder. Why did I think THAT mattered?!), I dragged those photos to the desired folder. And duly noted some message that warned me that this was irreversible.
At some point, I noticed that a main folder name C/Diane/User... was red. I ignored this until I noted that quite a number of my selected photos displayed the "offline or missing" message when I tried to use them in the Develop module.
I checked the Help files and it seemed that using the Synchronize command was the solution. I'm still getting the same message on these photos.

I did a search on this forum and did read through much of Jeremy's thread but I didn't do any importing or exporting and truthfully, my eyes started to glaze over. I'd appreciate any help you all might offer

Right click on the red folder and choose "Locate missing folder". Then navigate to where it should be. If it is a top level folder, everything shall fall in place.

And having done the red folder as Denis suggested, click on the question mark on any leftover thumbnails, and locate those odd ones that you've moved around.

And next time you decide to move elephants, try dragging and dropping them in Lightroom itself, and you'll save yourself some big headaches. ;)

Thanks Denis and Victoria but...

There's no longer a red folder. I do not know why.

I did drag and drop those ellies from inside LR-they're surprisingly light even in RAW. Baboons however, are trickier.

I suspect I made my mistake when I moved them again but this time from inside My Pictures.
So I clicked on the question mark (in grid view), it told me where the photo used to reside, and then I clicked Locate. That action took me to a box that says "Look in" and then names the file it used to be in. Not surprisingly, it's not there.

What the heck is Synchronize supposed to do anyway?

Well, I fixed this. Reading through some other posts, someone pointed out that LR is a database. After smacking myself on the forehead a few times, I set about returning my photos to their original folders. Using LR, for each photo or group of photos, I located the original folder, switched to My Pictures and moved them back to original folder. LR was happy.
I did move them around again, but I created some new folders in LR and moved them there. Life is good.
