millisecond [LR renders image differently than initial jpeg preview]

thanks for all the help in the past ...

I wanted to know something more,

I see when importing new photo's (RAW) into the catalog, and when I first

click on a photo , I see it and then in a millisecond the program seems to

apply a sudden and permanent change. What is this. It looks like the

program, changed the tone curvature . Are these settings default?

This must be the most frequent question ever. What you see first is the embedded Jpeg. Then the Lightroom preview... Search a bit, there's loads about it already here.

Sean, I know you're a busy guy, but we're trying to populate the Tricks and Tips forum. So far, it's kinda thin, with a couple of FAQs, like this one, and a multiuser/network work around.

I don't feel technically up to accurately explaining, the embedded jpeg, then preset, then cached preview, sequence. Is there a thread or a blog post somewhere that elaborates this, that you/we could post in the tricks tips?

Nicely done! You know, I've read that post before and forgot where I saw it.

I guess where I start getting confused, is when does the preview cache come into play? What happens when the cache gets stale and auto-deletes?

I guess it depends on file type? DNGs will have an updated JPG thumbnail embedded, JPGs and TIFs are their own previews, and RAWs depend on the cache?

I've never yet seen an auto-deleted preview for a raw file revert to the camera jpeg preview. I always assumed that even if the 1:1 was auto-deleted, the standard preview remained. No?

Yeah, LR will always just generate a new standard preview as soon as you go to an image for which they were just deleted.

I'm just not that observant. So the dreaded in-camera jpeg preview only lasts that first few seconds after import, and it's never heard from again?

I'll have to pay more attention to what I'm seeing.

Yes I'm having an issue with outputting contact sheets as pdf's from lightroom with acrobat. I'm using a pc and some of the images on a contact sheet [ 9 up] are more pixelated than others! you can see this in acrobat when you zoom in. I just noticed when going back to lightroom and opening the images again in Develop when i click on an image the ones that open with a low res display then half a second later a full res file opens are the ones that are blurry on the contact sheets. some how that low res image that comes up first is the one used to create the contact sheet image!! where do I go to sort this one out?

The Develop module does an initial screen render from the preview cache while it is reading the photo file, then renders that full res data on screen.

I've seen this pixelation problem before in Slideshow where Lightroom has not had time to render the previews fully before the Slideshow runs so it shows pixelated versions. I'd suggest as a test that you select those images that were pixelated and use the menu option Library > Previews > Render 1:1 Previews. Once that has finished (watch the progress bar at the top left of the screen), try printing those via your PDF printer again.

The problem here is that it is neither a "Tip" nor a "Trick"! Just a misunderstood LR behavior. May we suggest Ian, beside the "Tips & Tricks" section to have one titled something like: "I wonder why..." so we can title our topics as, for example here, "a preview is seen for a short time and change".

Yes indeed, I was envisioning something along the lines of FAQs; you're right Tips and Tricks is not the place for it, but was the best fit at present.

I guess I wanted to stir up a little discussion on just this "meta-topic".
