This one gets five angry faces!

1. I haven't had sidecar files for several years, my DBhas been fine, all 15k photos have keyword, captions, and develop edits that have beel living happily in the DB the whole time

2. Now all of a sudden LR has the little sidecar missing icon by every file. If I select all and click on the fix it arrow it writes sidecars for every file even though write to sidecar is turned off in catalog preferences.

3. Only way I can get to normal is write the sidecar, delete it from disk, the come in and manually tell LR to ignore the missing sidecar file, which has ot be done one file at a time. This is idiotic and a huge waste of time.

4. I tried the old export the catalog, create a new one, and re-import from the catalog, and it did nothing to solve the problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Brett, welcome to the forum!

Silly question.... do you actually want sidecar warnings? And if not, go to View menu > View Options and turn off the 'unsaved metadata' badge and the icons will all disappear.

My View Menu > View Options has 'unsaved metadata' turned off, but I continue to have this "sidecar file missing " symbol in the upper right corner: (see attachment, if I did this correctly.)

The file now carries CR2 + JPEG designation when I hover my cursor over the image. Explorer shows three files: CR2, JPEG, and XMP

The books I have and Adobe Help don't spend a lot of time on this. Is there a comprehensive explanation or fix.

That aspect sounds familiar. I imported a bunch of directories with Raw + JPG and raw + PSD of the same names (they came from CS3 editing before I got lightroom).

I noticed that it appeared to become confused. It would have a sidecar file for the raw, but then JPG would report lack of one. I had all sorts of weird indications.

I did not research, I didn't want the JPG and PSD's anyway so just deleted them. Not a real good solution.

Is your problem only when you have a RAW and JPG of the same name?

Before Lightroom, I edited using Bridge & CS3 & 4. I always kept the file names the same with the distinguishing feature being the extension. Experimentally, in Lightroom, I used export to create the JPEG's and stored them in the same location as the RAW file.

Lightroom's behavior, and I'm too new to criticize, seems weird in this regard.

Well, Lr offers a choice of:
1) importing the raw and JPG as separate files. In this case, the files can be handled completely differently adjustment and metadata wise.
2) importing the raw, and treating the JPG as a sidecar file. In this case only the raw is adjustable by Lr, however the JPG is treated as a companion file in the case of file operations such as move, copy, delete, rename.

If you have actual XMP sidecar files, as well as potential JPG files, I'm not sure how to advise you to straighten it out.

The raw+JPG option is intended for folks shooting in that mode. If the JPGs have been created and exported from Lr back into the original import folder, that might not be the best way to approach it.

Weird may be a little strong, but it's surely not intuitive.
