Hi,

I use LR ver. 1.4.1 on my WIN XP SP2 and have about 23''' photos in one catalog.

I have recently discovered some strange behavior around the metadata presets which i have not seen before.

- I was away from my stationary PC and used my laptop for some LR work. I used both the import metadata preset option as well as the spray can and the metadata preset dropdown menu in the right hand library panel. When i exported the catalog from my laptop and imported it into LR in my stationary PC. None of he metadata presets i did on the laptop showed up.

- If a have a number of non metadata preset tagged photos in a folder in my catalog and select only one in the middle (in grid view). If i then use metadata preset dropdown menu all of the photos after the selected one also get the same metadata preset without being selected.

- If i select some of my photos which i have used metadata presets on the metadata preset drop down menu in the right panel does not always correspond to the previously used metadata preset on the same photo.

- If i use the spray can to spray a metadata preset on my photos the metadata preset drop down menu is in sync with the sprayed metdata when i later on select the photo. If i have used the metadata preset drop down menu in the right panel it does not keep in sync with the set metadata.

Currently i can only use the spray can because this is the only function which keeps the set metadata in sync with the metadata preset drop down menu. I have tried this with a new almost empty catalog and can not reproduce the problems. I have also deleted the preference file with no change. I have not seen these problems before LR 1.4.x

Have anyone seen this before and can help me out?

Thanks!

Bengt, I'm afraid I don't have anything to offer with respect to your metadata preset issues, but I did want to take the opportunity to welcome you to LR Forums.

I'm sure someone with more metadata experience will be along shortly.

The only thought that occurs to me, is to 'divide and conquer'. Do you just have the one large-ish catalog? If you have other catalogs, does the problem occur there as well? If no other catalogs, could you export one of your problem folders as an independent catalog to experiment with? See if the problem follows the folder, or stays with the main catalog?

Hope there are no problem with large catalog. We install LR at work and within 2 months we have 11,''' photos. By the end of the year...At present date, no problems.

Can this tip help you understand about presets?

I missed the "Store Presets with Catalog" check box and it could explain why my metadata preset tagged photos not where tagged anymore after import. Have to try it. If i check "Store Presets with Catalog" i hope it does not mess up my current catalog so i loose the metadata tagging on all my photos!

I tried with a completely new catalog with just a few photos in it and i did not succeed to reproduce the problems. I will try to split the catalog and see what happens.

I saw another post where someone had ~1''''' photos in the same catalog without any other problem than it where making LR a little slow?

Probably not causing the problem; this setting just configures whether your presets are 'Global', and available to all catalogs, or 'Local' and associated with just one catalog. It's more about how and where the presets themselves are stored, and not how they're used. Denis P. did a nice explanation here:

Or, open your new catalog, and import your old catalog into it, perhaps a folder or two at a time. Stopping to test your problem at each step.

File menu > Import from Catalog .... : which will open a dialog allowing you to select folders, or individual images.

Yes, that's true.
