Metadata Browser not updating

Hi everyone,

I recently returned from vacation and wanted to change the Creator field as my wife sometimes uses my camera. Here's what happened:

1 - Clicked on about a dozen pictures.
2 - Changed creator to her name.
3 - LR took a moment to write the XMPs.
4 - Clicked the arrow next to Creator to show me pictures taken by her.
5 - Metadata Browser -> Creator -> <her name> appeared, but with a ''' next to it.

So, while I can see (in the "All Photographs" library) that there are pictures with the Creator field set appropriately, the Metadata Browser isn't updating its count, nor is it showing me her pictures when I click on her name.

Any ideas? Thanks!!

p.s. My test values (Captain Ron... hehe) are now 'stuck' in the Metadata Browser. Any way to kick them out? Seems difficult to get that thing to update.

First, I assume LR 1.4.1?
Did you do this in Grid View, or by clicking on the film strip? Experimenting, I find that selecting multiple images in Grid allows me to update Creator on multiple images. Selecting images in filmstrip in Loupe view, the Creator is only upated on the 'most-selected' image, and then you'd have to 'Sync Metadata", to write the remaining selection.

That said, it doesn't seem to account for all your symptoms. Seems to be working for me tho'. Have you restarted LR, or rebooted in the course of your investigation?

Possibly deleting preferences might help. See 'LR Troubleshooting' in the Tips/Tricks forum.

Hi Brad,

This was done in Grid view.

After updating the Creator, I individually cycled through all 8 images and verified that on the right hand side (under Metadata), my wife's name was indeed set as Creator.

I did not restart LR, nor did I restart my computer (PowerMac DC 2.' GHz, Nov. ''5).

Strangely... I started an import of some new photos before I went to sleep. When I woke up this morning, the import was done, and lo' and behold - the count next to my wife's name in the Metadata Browser is updated.

What on Earth? :lol:

It seems like a pass is made over ALL metadata on importing a new album, but I can't rely on this as a fix...

Without knowing more, it could be that just time passing is the fix. Some of those count numbers can be very slow to update. Clearly, at some point it's too slow. :)

Interesting Brad, I assumed it was live since playing with the metadata gets the keyword to appear in the browser immediately. I wonder if there's a way to force an update there...

I don't want to say it's not 'live', but ..... The algorithm is not publicly known as far as I know, but it sure seems as if the program just keeps counting those things over and over, as opposed to some incremental tracking mechanism. Just my speculations and impressions from watching the program work, and listening in various forums.

And, it's different in the 2.' beta, and who knows about the 2.' final.

This is one of those frustrating bits to Lightroom. I am hoping 2.' addresses this, but then there are other issues/enhancements that I expect will be a higher priority.

Nope. The metadata browser showed up in 1.1, and it has always used some kind of lazy update mechanism. A restart has always forced an update.

The 2.' beta no longer has the metadata browser anyway (replaced by the filter bar) so hopefully it's all completely different under the hood.

dear Brad, thanks for your input

i'll try to explain how i used the metadata browser

let's say i'm living in the US, i'm mainly taking pictures in Boston and Denver
since i'm not fond of geography i always forget that Boston is in Massachusetts and Denver in Colorado

the metadata browser, with this hierarchical location tree (oops i hope it's meaning something) greatly helped me to show the correct location

now let's say that my location tree is something like

- US
-- Massachusetts
--- Denver
---- Number of pictures 25'
-- Unknown state
--- Denver
---- Number of pictures 25

this is really what i had (with location in France)
i can't be sure that all my photos taken in Massachusetts are in Denver, but all the photos taken in Denver should be in Massachusetts
so all i had to do was "clicking" this 25 photos to filter them, then thanks to a copy-paste tag them with the Massachusetts state, et voila, i'd see automagically one counter going from 25' to 275, the other from 25 to ' and the line disappear

i'm not sure i can have this hierarchical tree view again with LR2.'

In that case you'll be thrilled to know you can work exactly the same way with the new Metadata filters - in fact, they're easier than before.

You can select 'location' in each column. Then at the right hand edge of each column is a little flyout menu - you can choose to show them hierarchically.

Anything you do across multiple columns will filter the selection down further doing an AND filter, and selecting multiple items in the same column will do an OR filter.

This becomes quite powerful when you realize you can add the same column more than once to the filter. Simply open 2 or 3 Metadata>Location columns, and you can do fairly complex boolean filters.

seems to me that LR2 needs a learning curve
