Metadata and Copyright Information?

Anyone here have any tips in entering Metadata and Copyright information?

I guess what I'm asking is, I don't feel comfortable in providing all my details in the metadata and copyright information because I really don't know what this information will be used for?

You can put in your name, address, etc. I don't mind but I noticed that many people do it because it has some importance and essentially, I want to know whether there are some information that at least should be in there and the other information not necessary for whatever purpose metadata and copyright information is used for....

As an example nutsnbolts, many images are posted on the web. Now, if someone finds your image somewhere, and decides they want to use it in a poster campaign , you really want them to know who to pay!

Yes this is definately true. It's subjective to what a person feels like putting in there. It's like asking what keywords do people use.

I figured I try to post something to see whether there was a general rule of thumb (items to at least make sure is available in the metadata) versus what is really useless and not really important.

Anyone else have suggestions. Feel free to comment your items that you put in the metadata.

I also did not want my personal address to be plastered all over the web, but I did want my contact info to appear. As a safe trade-off, I rent a PO Box at my local post office. My work is displayed on the web through various uses and I do want the Metadata and Copyright Info to follow it.

Just a suggestion.

Another way is to list an email address just for the purpose and a url for a photo homepage which can have further contact info.

Almost off topic, so I'll say no more, but:

Interestingly enough, US legislation is being proposed that would protect the copyrights of "Orphaned Work", i.e copyrighted work whose author cannot be identified/located. This is particular of interest in stock photo and general web display of photographic works, where the copyright data is intentionally or inadvertently removed or changed.

I did a mock-up of what you might enter in the Edit Metadata Dialog. You need not do more than the IPTC Copyright section, not IPTC Creator section.

All this said IMHO.
