Merging a travel catalog with my main catalog

What is the best way to merge a travel catalog. (use smart Previews?)

Copy the catalog file with it folder containing the original cataloged image file as a package to a portable EHD.
When done, move the portable EHD to the computer with the master catalog an use the “Import from Another Catalog” function to merge the contents of the travel catalog into the master catalog file. Also in Lightroom use the option to copy the image files and folders to a permanent location relative to the master catalog.
