When I "save Metadata to file" Lr seems to be making a copy of the photos in a separate folder along with the metadata. Is this normal, and if so why? Should it not just add it to the original folder?
No, that's not normal. Depending on the image file type, Lr should either embed the metadata in the image file(for RGB types like JPG or TIF), or it should create an XMP format 'sidecar' companion file in the original folder for camera raw types.
Can you describe in more detail what you're seeing, with file and folder names, etc. ?

[/quote]And how you got the originals imported into Lightroom. Also check to see if the imported original files are Read Only.
I think I discovered the problem. When I imported a group of pictures I had been copying them instead of simply just adding them to a catalog. Then when I entered metadata it was put (xmp file) with the copied versions of the pictures not the originals. Now that I an just adding pictures to a catalog the metadata is going with the originals. Thanks for the input.
