When selecting the sky in develop mode, the GPU memory useage maxes out at 6Gb and everything slows down. It's impossible to edit the mask using the add or subtract buttons as it is too slow to correctly accept when I have clicked the mouse, and I end up with random selections. It's a Windows PC with 64Gb of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6Gb card. I've updated the driver, and it has had no effect. LR version is 12.2. Any help appreciated.

Assuming that LR otherwise behaves normally, your symptoms are mostly caused by bugs in the graphics driver -- AI masking relies heavily on correctly operating drivers, and since LR pushes the limits on GPUs in ways that most other apps do not, it's frequently tripping over bugs in the manufacturer's drivers.

You've got the latest Nvidia Studio driver for your graphics hardware. There's a newer Game...
Can you give me some specs on the PC? That 1060 GPU is long in the tooth, but I think it should be able to handle new masking load, but I'm not sure about that. Maybe it can't with that 6 GB of memory. That masking puts a load on the GPU and CPU. I think Adobe took some risk adding these new features because I think they knew it was going to clog down some older rigs and laptops.

Are your files on an external spinner? Are you booting off an SSD? Is the cat on the Boot Drive? You have 64 of ram. That tells me you know how to handle your PC and probably bought that ram when it was expensive. Did you build that PC or buy it? If you bought it 6 years ago, you probably can't update the GPU, but maybe....

Have you noticed any other tasks slowing down that you normally do in LR (besides the new AI masking which is a very demanding computational load)?

There have been several other people asking your same question since the new LR masking tools came on board that have had your same difficulty. Have you looked at any of those threads because they are loaded with little troubleshooting tips.

If you have a PC that is 6 or 7 years old, then you are going to have to make sure you have done all the little things that we PC users do - latest drivers, bios, windows version, defrag your external drive (if that is where your files are), run a program like CCleaner to clean up your mess and registries and just make sure that you have done the basics.

Are any of your other programs behaving differently? Do you do any gaming?

Are you an experienced PC user or just dabble at it?

I had similar problems with the masking tools when my computer's hard drive had very little space left on. I recently moved my photographs to an external hard drive and the performance is much better now, so that might be something to consider.

Please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running.

Firstly, thanks for your responses. My apologies, I posted the question and was then travelling with no access to my PC.

Are your files on an external spinner? No Are you booting off an SSD? Yes Is the cat on the Boot Drive? Yes You have 64 of ram. The system was bought, but to my spec, I have asked if the Video Card can be upgraded.

There's a newer Game Ready driver, which you could try:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/199990/en-us/

Though Nvidia recommends the Studio drivers for creative apps, there isn't much evidence that the Studio drivers are anything but previous versions of the Game Ready drivers that have received a little more testing.

You could also try rolling back to a previous driver from, say, six months ago. That has helped a few people on the Adobe forums.

Your graphics hardware is 6.5 years old, relatively old for GPUs. It's pretty clear that the manufacturers stop fixing most bugs in the drivers for their older hardware -- Intel has published their policy, the other manufacturers not. Who knows if that's happened with the GTX 1060.

Unfortunately, Adobe stubbornly refuses to provide an option to disable the use of the graphics processor for AI masking, which runs fine albeit much more slowly without a GPU:

Hi John, many thanks for your suggestion to try that driver. I have installed it, rebooted the system, started LR and tried to modify one of the masks on an image which was causing issues previously - and it seems to be much smoother. When I originally specified the system in 2017 I wanted to ensure that it would last longer than other typical Windows PC's I had had, so went for a higher spec than I normally would. It's been pretty successful so far, but of course it's only as good as it's weakest link. The next machine will have a high spec GPU, is there any brand particularly suited to LR? or is it just spec dependent?
