Masking not working as expected...

I have been trying to work with the mask feature. It was working, but now when I selected any mask the intended area gets highlighted in red as expected but when I hit the "O" key the mask just gets darker and instead of adjusting just the selected area the enitre photo is impacted by the adjustment. I did a re-start but to no avail. Any ideas?

If the entire image gets adjusted, then that is usually because you have the mask tool panels collapsed, and you are moving the global sliders thinking these are the mask sliders.

Thank you for your response. I am only trying to adjust the mask. When the mask is created there is a red cast highlighting the area I want to adjust, but the "RED" highlight never goes away...it remains regardless of the adjustment I try to make.

Are you sure you have not strayed down below the Masking panel into the Basic panel and Below?

In the screen shot shown below, the lighter colored section are shown the lower part of the controls of the Masking panel. Below that begins the Basic panel with similar controls. If the "red" highlight never goes away, this is a good indication that you have strayed below the masking panel controls into the Basic controls and beyond.

That too indicates you are not moving mask sliders but global sliders.

So it turns out that a preset is showing up every time I create a new mask. If I hit RESET every time I create new mask, it works. Painful.

There is a checkbox to reset all sliders when you create a new mask… Enable it and that problem is over.
