Managing catalog backups

I see that my catalog backups are accumulating. I expect that each backup is cumulative and thus contains everything I have done to the date and time of the backup. Therefore, I think I can delete earlier backups and free up space.

Before I do that, is there something I am missing, some reason to keep the old catalog backups?

Chuck, yes, they're cumulative. Most folks keep only two or three most recent, for redundancy. If you can, try to keep the backups on a different drive from the catalog, or arrange to "backup the backups".

I see you're relatively new here, if nobody has already, let me welcome you.

If you plan to be a frequent contributor, you may want to build a signature block with your tech spec's. See User CP upper left. We have so many different computers, OSs, cameras, etc. here, it really helps reduce the confusion.

Can you point me to a solutiön to:

Make backups on my external drive and auto-delete backups older than 1'' days?

Cannot find any function in LR about that.

No, there's not currently a function to do automatically delete. I've heard it regularly requested though.

You can change the backup location though. When the backup dialog appears, you can change it there. If you need to bring up the backup dialog, go to Catalog Settings, set it to back up on next opening, close and reopen, run the backup to the new location, and then go back into Catalog Settings to set it to your normal backup schedule.

I feel a lot saver now I knaow the exact place of my LR-backup AND I am sure my backupsystem is backng up the backup too.

I have ended up using a program on the Mac called iBackup for backing up my Lightroom data. It is free, works well, and gives me an exact duplicate of all my files, including the previews, images, database, and presets. I no longer (at least currently) use the built-in backup feature. Works well, but I still am hoping for a more robust backup/archiving solution within Lightroom.

I liken this process to something like Vaults in Aperture, one of the few features I like of Aperture.

Where did you get that Ian? Maybe I can look there for a windows version or don't I have any chance?

iBackup is Mac only, I believe, although the link is buried in my response above (click on iBackup). Here is the link:

There is a backup program included in Windows that should work the same, however.

I used to use it when I Windows based, and still use it to run all of the Studio backups. Nice little program!

Ahhh, ok, I see.

iBackup is just a general backup prgm, nothing special to do with LR.

Well, next best thing for me is to rely on my general backup prgm and delete from time to time the old backups from LR (Now I know where they are, thanks to Victoria.

Maybe I can schedule something in my backup-prgm, I'll see.

Yes, Déjà Vu is good back-up software. Will do individual folders or whole drives and can be set-up for manual and auto back-up.

I'm not currently using it on my Laptop, tough.

I'll take a peek at iBackup. I had been using a GUI version of RSync, but due to all the file s being over 4 drives, it's been difficult to keep tabs on stuff. Check out my newest blog post for details on my current consolidation process. (much needed!)
