Lightroom Classic CC 8.1

IDK but recently upgrading to Lightroom Classic CC Version 8.1. I noticed that the size of the catalog is quite large? I tried creating a new catalog without importing any photos on it, as in the catalog has no photos still the file size of the catalog swells to 300MB plus. I just recently use Lightroom Classic CC version 8 is this really what their catalog file size is? I notice that when you create a new catalog it's a small catalog file size but when LRCAT-WAL enters the scene (specially when you close the catalog) the catalog file size increases. Please enlighten me. Thanks!

The WAL file is the Write Ahead Log. It is temporary internal work file that have LR changes that have not been written to the catalog and is only present when LR is running. You should not need to worry about this temporary file.

The catalog size itself makes no sense though (Cletus is absolutely right about the WAL file of course)

I just did some test new catalogs, they are 1.6Mb before any photos are imported. Why are you on 8.1? Not on the latest (8.3.1)? at least then you know you have all the latest bug fixes and we can compare things with you o the Forum.

Sounds like you have installed lots of Presets with Profiles attached. The Profiles are the culprit in a new catalog that swells by a few hundred megabytes.
