LRcat disappeared and changed drives!

Hi there

Running LR 3 on Drive B (32'gig internal sata)

Running LR2 on Drive C (128gig internal SSD)

Opened LR3 to find no images in catalogue. Went onto drive B and folders are there, but no lrcat, lrcat lock or previews.

Opened drive C my pictures to find the new lrcat somehow sneaked its way into where i run LR2?

and LR3 has some how taken over my system.

went to open LR 2 from its root localtion and got this message.

"The LR catalogue named 'main' can not be opened because it is from an earlier version of LR. Would you like to select a different catalogue?"
The LR3 beta release does not support catalogue upgrades.

This is very concerning. LR3 is supposed to not affect 2?

so was I!!

it seemed that the lrcat for 3 disappeared completely, and when i went to open it, was told it was not in existance, would i like to choose default location. Then it opened and appeared in the default drive for LR2. But then, no matter what i did LR 2 would not open, and i would get the above message i quoted. So i had to unistall 3 just to get 2 to work.....major bug there somewhere.

LR3 may have been assigned by Windows as the default app for lrcat files which would explain when clicking on the LR2 catalogue that LR3 tried to open it. LR3 creates a default catalogue in the default directories, if you move/delete it it may create a new one on start up as it can't see it any more. Starting LR2 / LR3 and then selecting a catalogue may have worked... Hard to really tell but I guess it was something like that :-)

that makes sense...sort of!!

what was strange to me was there was no lrcat for 3, when i started my computer. It was gone with all the previews, like it never existed.

I am running Vista 32 here and having no problems of this kind. Sorry to hear you're having trouble, but your first post concerns me in terms of your understanding of where these apps are and how and where the catalogs exist.

To say:

...doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The app doesn't run 'on a drive'; you may, in fact, have installed the app to a given drive such as 'B:' instead of in a default location like C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, but it doesn't mean they "run" there. If you install again I'd suggest you take note of your catalog settings and perhaps establish a new catalog in a location where you want it to live and then import to it by referencing the images in their location.

Even better and safer....for production work I am importing to LR 2.5 and then to work with LR3 Beta, I am creating duplicates of those by importing *and* copying the files already on my hard disk and indexed by LR 2.5 into a totally different and additional location I called LIGHTROOM 3 BETA ORIGINAL COPIES....I work on them there knowing that I may export some but that it's my work with the BETA and it's totally separate and safe from my production work.

Good luck. Don't give up on trying the BETA.
