I have a collection of 40 images in a collection. The collection is synched to my Cloud account.

I can see them in their correct sequence when viewed by filename inside the LRC collection (or original folder).

I can see them in the correct sequence if I view using Lr on iPad to view the album. Again, in filename sequence.

But when I view the album via a browser using a public shared link there are lots of images out of sequence.

Anyone got any ideas how to force the Web view to sort by filename.

I think the trick is in the icon Share Layout Grid in LrWeb:

This displays another panel which includes File Name.

LrWeb always displays the client view of a shared album using whatever has been set (by design or inadvertently) as the Custom Order. The owner of the shared album can view that album using a variety of sort orders, but the client view is always the set Custom Order. John has explained how you can reset the existing Custom Order to one of several different orders, but understand that doing that will reset any custom order that you may have set in LrC and all other synced apps.

I tried setting custom order in LrC collection… but could not see the web respect my manual sorting. I also see options in various places to set the sort order as filename. I have the images named to provide the correct sequence.

Maybe I need to resynch the collection back to LrCloud. I will try that first.

I will start again with a fresh pair of eyes in the morning.

The out of sequence pics seem related to occurrences of virtual images… but that may be a coincidence.

I will report back if I can crack the code

There's a difference between how you view the album when you are logged into LrWeb using your Adobe credentials, versus how you view the album in the "client view " mode, i.e. how your users would see the album after they click on the link that you send them, In the latter mode, there are no sort order options, the user will only see the set custom order. But in the first mode, there are several display options:

When you open an album into grid mode, there are several icons running vertically at the top right of the display. The top two are the Adaptive and Square grid modes, and if you click on the three horizontal lines icon below you will see that you can either display in capture date or custom order (with capture date being the likely initial order). There is no option to display in Filename order using either of those two grid options.

Next icon down is now called the "Share layout grid" and is basically your control over how your end users will see the album when you share it. The display order is ALWAYS Custom Order (so when you use that icon what you then initially see it what your users would see), but this grid gives you the option (using the floating tool bar bottom centre) to reset the custom order using various different sort orders, including Filename. You can also use the traditional drag and drop manual method to change the custom order. As I explained previously, any changes you make to the custom order should sync to all other of your client apps, including LrC.

There's a 4th icon, which is the Collaborative Proofing option.

If you have added VCs from within a synced collection, those VCs will also sync....but newly added images are typically added to the end of the custom order, which might explain why they might not be in the order that you were expecting. If filename order is your preferred display order, use the option in the "Share layout grid" to reset the order to "Filename".

Thanks for taking the time to cover the points above.

I am conscious of the client versus author aspect of things, with no difficulty getting the file name sequence in author mode. I am viewing in client mode to double check the sequence, because I can spot the limited client options. [BTW… I could not find a way to manually drag and drop when in Web mode (client or author).

I created the VCs before synching, In fact, I exported my target jpgs. to a subfolder, re numbering with xxxxx-999.. so there would be no vcs and filenames were in the required sequence.

I think the trick will be to create a manual sequence before synching a new collection to a new album.

It is crazy it is so difficult to do something so simple. Fine… if your final sequence is in capture time sequence… let’s see what happens tomorrow.

A new collection is a fresh start.

I haven’t looked at this for a while and don’t have time to check now, but I recall that the public URL’s sorting is also refreshed by unsharing and then sharing again . The URL will be the same, but a custom order would be refreshed, though the method I described before would be sufficient to sort by file name, which I thought was your question.

It's just as easy to create your preferred order before or after syncing.

I don't think it's that difficult once you know where the controls are and how to use them (which John has explained). In fact, once you know how to change things to your preference it's really rather simple.

To use drag and drop to reorder, you have to be using the "Share layout grid", which is really the grid you should be using to setup shared albums (it's also the grid which allows you to add text and sub-divisions to enhance the client experience).

I have tried that… several times…
As I have reworked this set of images so many times by now I will create a fresh batch, create a new collection, manually sort, synch… and see what happens.

I will leave the existing images / collection in situ… to see if I can later trouble shoot and learn what I am tripping over.

Turning off synch for the album... using the shared button to set as by filename, turning on synch ... did not work...

But... re creating the shared url.. and clicking on the revised url ... the sequence is now correct.

I did not create new images or a new collection.. just used images / collection as they were.

I will watch out for any thing odd going forward.

Ps. I normally do not need to be so specific about sort order... but this time the contents were very sensitive to the order.

Also.. I have no idea if cached browser settings may have had an impact... but I viewed the public album also on ipad and iphone and was still getting the wrong sequence.

BTW. Re virtual images ... I did not synch virtual images to the album... I used the virtual images to export to a folder of jpgs (with my peferred web jpg settings) and synched those to the album. However, a few of the virtual images would have been added later .. and these may have been the culprits... the funny thing is that the later images did not appear at the bottom of the album but within an image or two of their rightful sequence. Weird..

I am not going to spend any more time on this. I will post back if I discover anything worth sharing.

Again thanks for all contributions to this discussion (and I am now aware of the floating edit panel ..).

In case anyone is reading this in future... This is the key point..... Thanks @Jim Wilde

Next icon down is now called the "Share layout grid" and is basically your control over how your end users will see the album when you share it.

Something funny happened with the sequence of virtual copies ... I will watch out for this when I am next creating a collection.. it may have been self inflicted ..

Regardless .. using the "Shared Layout Grid " option I can drag and drop as desired and get the required final sequence .

Glad to be of help. But, to be clear, you should be able to do that drag and drop reordering in ANY of the synced Lightroom client apps, including LrC. Each collection has a custom sort order, which can be changed by the user as required, but any changes will sync to all the other clients (if the collection is synced). And it's that set custom order which is what the client will see when opening the shared album.

That has caught many people out in the past, i.e. the owner gets the order set in LrWeb, then inadvertently changes the custom order in, say, LrC and which then syncs the changes to the cloud and thus changes the order that the client sees. It's easily done, e.g. viewing the synced collection in a grid in LrC which is using the capture date sort order, and the user inadvertently has the mouse cursor held down while moving from one image to another. That single change now updates the custom order to what is now on screen, i.e. everything is in capture date order apart from that single inadvertent change. All the previous carefully crafted custom order is gone. As I said, easily done and something to be aware of with custom ordering.

Good advice.

The Web Album view is now very good.... and saves a lot of effort maintaining a web site.

99% of the time I am happy with capture time seq, which for me always correspondents to filename seq. This was a sequence of portraits where shots of individuals needed to be group together and a manual sort seq was vital. Overall, a useful learning experience. Thanks again.
