The slowdown of Lr that started in the 13.3 still continues for me at 14.0.1. It takes days to generate several hundred smart previews. Are there any solutions forum members have found?

Adobe official forums are full of similar complaints, with veteran users at a loss of what to do.

I have just gone thru my Win 11 Settings, stripping out all the features which have the potential to affect Win 11 performance. Too early to say if it will have any impact.

I find the current interactivity of LrC to be absolutely awful. These are all independent of potential intensive tasks such as batch exports, Denoise, use of Ai filters.

The impression I have is that something is putting a load on just basic LrC operations.

I am eagerly awaiting the next point release, but have no basis for hope. Luckily, my image volumes are currently low.

Firstly, I think there are fundamental problems with both Previews and Keywords that Adobe have never acknowledged or sorted out. A small but significant number of Lightroom users with brains and experience have reported and complained about these problems for decades. But Adobe have steadfastly ignored comments and just carry on banking huge profits. Also in my view many Adobe customers probably don't use the software features in enough depth or data volume to experience some of the problems. And for example, how many users know (or care) precisely what the differences are between 1:1, Smart and Standard Previews or Flat and Hierarchical Keyword lists or Colour Management ?

Moving on ........... Why do you create Smart Previews ?
You might be able to manage with smaller custom “Standard Previews” at a lower quality which should generate faster and take up less disc space.
- My custom previews are 2048 pixels & LOW quality (I don’t use either OneDrive or Cloud)

What do you ACTUALLY need and USE Smart Previews for ?
Maybe you Develop using Smart Previews and/or keep them in a Cloud ?
If your preview problems are very severe it might be wise to rename all saved preview data files and fully regenerate them ........... maybe as a last resort ?

2nd message with some suggestions follows …..

Some suggestions for generating LrC Previews

Rather than deleting and regenerating all your Previews, if you first want to try to just improve (speed up) your generation of new previews:
- standard advice for better overall Lightroom performance applies and includes:

- put Lightroom and your catalog(s) on your fastest drive
- turn off file indexing in Windows
- turn off Microsoft Antimalware checking for all your own photo folders
- turn off any other virus checking of your own camera files
- stop using .xmp files
- increase Adobe Cache file size - I went from 50GB to 200GB
- create and or regenerate previews using both smaller and lower quality
- importing photos it seems to help if you set Thumbnails in Grid view to the minimum size
- probably wise to avoid OneDrive, Cloud and Sync-ing altogether if you can

This year I experienced major performance problems with Lightroom Classic and did some major spring cleaning which included regenerating all my LrC previews. I regenerated 130,000 all new, smaller and lower quality previews in batches in under an hour while making/drinking coffee and browsing the BBC World News and Facebook !

Instead of importing an entire batch of say 500 photos you can try using smaller batches.

You can experiment to find out how many photos you can select at one time to generate previews without crashing your LrC or slowing it to a halt
– so maybe try just 25 or 50 photos then 100 etc.
For some reason LrC seems to cope better with multiple small batches run simultaneously than with one much larger batch.
Plus running 5~6 batches simultaneously uses the CPU more efficiently - a single batch only uses 15~20% - using more will use 75~90% CPU.
It's a pain and should not be necessary.
Don't know why or how multiple small batches works better but I think it was a tip on DPReview some time ago.
My PC was stalling or crashing LrC when regenerating previews for 10,000 or more photos.
I tried simultaneous smaller batches of 6~7,000 and they work very well for me.

Good luck !

Adobe does not publicly acknowledge bugs. That does not mean that they haven't attempted to address them internally. First of all an issue needs to be a problem of a significant number of users for a company like Adobe to devote the resources to resolving it. I don't see any issue at all with keywords. There are limitations in the SQL language that make it imprecise to search words AND phrases. With the realeas of V14. Adobe has overhauled the Preview process. So it is not accurate for you to suggest that Adobe has not addressed these.

I agree that LrC v14 has encountered slow downs not seen in prior versions. I see this in the MacOS version and others have reported this in WindowsOS. Typically a Program will contain "debug code" to trap unhandled errors in the "dot 0" release. This ususlly gets removed once it has served it purpose. We are still in the v14.0.n release.

Adobe typically releases updates on a 2 month cycle to accommodate new camera models and correct bugs that have been caught and fixed in the interim sind the last update. V14.0 was released in October. I am expecting to see a 14.1 or 14.2 in December.

Adobe does not publicly acknowledge bugs.
This is not correct.

At Adobe Community Forums there are many bugs that currently have the status "Acknowledged".
Example: https://community.adobe.com/t5/ligh...settings-not-working-correctly/idi-p/14932036

Note: that "Acknowledged" appears on the OP of this thread.

At the risk of geeking out, can you post a list of those features and how you stripped them out.
Sorry, I was thinking about public acknowledgement as in a News release. Sure reported bugs that have been identified as such are acknowledges in the Community pages.
Cletus is mostly right here. How many of us have the time and energy to check the Adobe website for acknowledged bugs. If I were in charge, (ha! ha! ha!) the web site would have a separate page for acknowledgd bugs and their status, e.g. being worked on or not.) I'm sure that competitors would pounce on that page, but overall it would probably save users lots and lots of time.

I used this video clip and followed several suggestions. Different settings may be less or more important on an individual basis but it gives ideas on where to look.

I am still trying to find the best font size setting to use, but have not had the time to fine tune this.

Great Video. I have already done some of these settings for Win 10, but clearly Win 11 has more config options.
