LRC 14 didn't fix Memory Leak/Crashing issues...I was ever hopeful that 14 might tackle the memory leak/stability issue. But alas it did not. CPU usage at 135%, Memory at 42GB. MacBook Pro M1Pro, 16GB RAM and enough HD space to program the space shuttle. LRC is (has?) taken 45 minutes to import 60Jpegs from the desktop. and is once again not responding and a Force Quit will be required. This has been going one for well over a year and its no longer workable. Adobe (& Apple) have been sent crash reports and NO solution is available. Re-installed LRC to many times to count and EVERYTHING else works perfectly.

Capture 1 is lightening fast.....I guess that is my only option now.

I haven't been able to reproduce this. Do you see the same if you import those photos into an empty catalog (just as a test)?

OK, thanks. I tried that...same issue...bouncing spinning beachball and out of control Memory an dCPU usage. Currently 15 minutes to import 60 Jpeg and LRC is NOT responding. Thanks for the idea!!!

This is a long shot, but have you tried doing that same test in a clean macOS user account? You can delete it again after, but it would help to determine whether there's something else in the mix... some other software running in the background, that kind of thing.

OK, I tried an existing Guest account, no luck..same issues. I created a new instance, installed LRC and their the 60 photos from the HD and 25 photos off a SD card...all failed to import...high CPU/High Memory and LRC NOT responding - force quit then a reboot, same thing the next time...

Appreciate the help! I thought it was Fuji RAW files at first, then FF Jpeg, then tried Canon files...same results each time.

Since the clean user failed too, the next step is to perform a clean reinstall of the application.
  1. Close Lightroom
  2. Restart the computer
  3. Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Lightroom
  4. Restart the computer
  5. Install Lightroom via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.
  6. Restart the computer
  7. Launch Lightroom
  8. Wait 5 minutes
  9. Try again!

Well, I gave it the ol' college try....3 times. I have seen and tried this from other tips online and today it still didn't help.

Thanks!

And the test catalog is on the internal SSD, not an external drive? What software is running in the background, like anti-virus?

Test catalogue has been to internal SSD, yes. Regular catalogue I use the internal SSD. Antivirus 1 is turned off as with EVER other app...Outlook, Snag IT, Notes, Safari etc......Nothing running other then Activity Monitor which I don't start until the whole thing goes south.

Can I ask whether you are applying any develop presets, especially the adaptive ones, at import?

Is there a different result between Copy, Move or Add on the import dialogue?

You can certainly ask! No Presets at import.

I have tried all three options and have even converted RAW files to DNG files with other software (Iridient x-Transformer and Topaz Denoise - old version and AI). No luck.

I'm mystified... we're not hearing widespread reports, and I'd expect to with an issue like this. If it was my machine, I think I'd try running something like Onyx, plus the Apple Hardware tests, and if that still didn't work, I'd do a clean OS install. Something is definitely wrong, but by trying a clean user account, we've ruled out all of the standard troubleshooting in one go.

Sorry, away on a photo trip to Victoria! On return this AM I updated LR with the latest bug fix and tried to import 35 photos my wife took on her iPhone. (from a folder on my desktop) So far, it's been 30 minutes, I've had LR not respond 5 times and keep getting the spinning beachball. Hung up again just trying to add the Keywords for her with the Activity Monitor showing memory use at 24gb! I'm using Capture 1 (sigh!) for my shots from my camera.

Oh dear, sorry to hear you've not resolved this. As mentioned earlier by @Victoria Bampton I would be formatting and rebuilding my machine from scratch to try and resolve this. If you do go down this route you could try LrC first before reinstalling all your other apps and restoring from backup.

I am not saying this is not of Adobe's creation but things do just get bogged down.

Occasionally, things just need a rebuild. It may or may not fix it, but I would suggest it's worth a try.

You may have tried this, but have you disabled any plug-ins to see if they could be involved.

I'm not a MAC user but see you are using M1. The Rosetta emulation is not enabled is it?

There seem to be several threads about very high memory useage in LR Classic slowing down processing but I hope my experience helps and hope this is in the right place. For a few months LR Classic on my iMac has been slowing down when performing multiple operations (exporting, importing, processing etc) and after searching forums I started to monitor the memory useage in Activity Monitor. Even with 32GB this showed memory going into the red quite quickly, and doing so even if LR was doing nothing. I don't sync images.

After two online chats with Adobe (available 24/7 amazingly) I was asked to set up a new catolog and reimport my photos. This has worked and memory useage has so far never risen above green.

The huge pain is of course reimporting 46,000 images and sorting them into Collections again. But worth it if it stops the grinding to a halt.

Thanks for your feedback!! I too do NOT sync any photos at any time, let alone when trying to import. I have ~64,000 photos in the catalog and, to be quite honest, dread the idea of sorting them into the collections (which is around 80). I don't have the time at the moment moment and while I appreciate this was an Adobe solution - its NOT an Adobe solution if it means hundreds of hours of work for you and I, its potentially our solution to their problem. Again, appreciate this, and let you know if I decide to take the plunge.

Useful as a test, but I wouldn't recommend that as a solution. Apart from anything else, you shouldn't have to go to all that work!

It might be interesting to do a couple more tests of the memory-hog catalog. Of note, I'd be interested to see if deleting the history of all of the photos helps (you can do that as a batch process), and if that doesn't, does renaming the previews help at all? It'd also be interesting to see if creating a blank catalog and then using Import from Another Catalog to pull in the images (complete with collections!) solves the issue.

OK, I have already created a blank catalog and used the Import from Another Catalog and that didn't work. Just tired renaming previews (and did a restart) and that didn't work and have just cleared all the history of the photos. Again, did another restart and optimized the catalog. While attempting to import 51 photos as a test, LRC crashed my machine and NOTHING would work as it said I was out of memory. This time LRC sailed above 48 GB. Forced Quit and everything else works fine. Capture 1 imported the same files last week in about 30 seconds with no issues. I have no issues running anything on my Mac except LRC trying to import 1 photo or dozens.

I'm hesitant to do that when EVERYTHING else works flawlessly. I have seen others posting the same problem on other sites. https://www.reddit.com/r/postprocessing/comments/11h70s5/lightroom_slowly_eats_ram/

https://community.adobe.com/t5/ligh...s-to-release-afterwards/idc-p/14276018#M56527

And many more....with little to no response from Adobe to how they will fix it.

Thanks for taking the time to hear my issues!
Mark, Perhaps try first copying files from camera card to computer folder and then importing? Perhaps it is the camera/Lrc not supporting the camera correctly?
